The village of Portsalon with its
little harbour lies midway along the eastern fringe of the Fanad
Peninsula in north Donegal. Across the broad expanse of Lough Swilly the
hills of the Inishowen Peninsula are visible - during the summer months
a car ferry service connects nearby Rathmullan with Buncrana,
a route which opens up some interesting day trips possibilities.
Fanad Head, with its imposing lighthouse and broad vistas over the
north Atlantic Ocean, can be reached in 15 mins by car.
If you look through tourism brochures for Donegal you are almost certain
to see a photo of Ballymastocker Bay, arguably the finest beach
in Ireland and listed in The Guardian's list of top "ten beaches in the
world". With approx 3km of golden sand and surrounded by mountains on
one side and one of Ireland's deepest natural harbours on the other,
Ballymastocker is an awe inspiring sight. No.2 Knockalla Cottage is located
within 10 min walk of this great natural asset - enjoyed in equal
measure by walkers, surfers and surf fishermen.
Portsalon Golf Club is a a classic links course and combines
breathtaking scenery with a challenging and interesting course layout. A
modern Clubhouse, enjoying panoramic views over Lough Swilly, is located
just above the village's small harbour. A visit to Sarah's Bar is
highly recommended as this unique establishment resonates with the
particular charms of the Irish pub of yesteryear. Both the golf links
and Sarah's Bar are within 5 min drive time of No.2 Knockalla Cottage.
Less than 2 km from the cottages are the
superb Ballydaheen Gardens. These Japanese and English style
gardens slope all the way down to the shores of Lough Swilly. The
gardens meet the shore at the famous 7 Arches - these are a
series of seven interconnecting sea caves have been excavated by the
action of waves on ancient limestone rock. |
