A large and spacious newly built home
with all the amenities that one might expect for a pleasant and
comfortable stay. Ideal for large families or groups, with four bedrooms
to sleep up to 8 adults. A large kitchen and dining area, a utility room
for laundry, a main bathroom, two en-suites and a downstairs toilet for
ablutions, two living rooms, each with its own fireplace and TV.
Outside, a decked patio area, and an enclosed back yard. Not far from
the main road between Culdaff and
Moville, and only a 7 minute walk to
the village green, the cottage would also serve as an ideal touring base
for Northern Inishowen and surroundings.
Culdaff is one of the most northerly towns in Ireland, and is near
Ireland's most northerly point; - Malin Head. Situated in picturesque
surroundings on the north coast of the Inishowen Peninsula facing the
North Atlantic and on the banks of the estuary of the Culdaff River.
Culdaff is a small village, which has recently grown with the
development of new housing. (a phenomena which the whole country is
experiencing.)
Culdaff has been around since the 8th century, when it was the early
monastic settlement of St Buadan, though the present village layout is
based on an 18th century plan. The existing church is built over the
foundations of the old monastic church.
Today, Culdaff has become popular for its "famous" hotel, restaurant and
pub known simply as McGrory's; where one can experience good food, great
"craic" and excellent service. This family run establishment has been
running since 1928, and has as its main attraction;
"Mac's Backroom
Bar", a venue for musicians, with many famous names having performed
here over the years.
An annual event in the village is commemorated in October to honour the
memory of Charles Macklin, an 18th century playwright, comedian and
actor who was born near here in 1690. His plays were performed in Dublin
and at Covent garden in London. He died in 1797 aged 107.
A lovely sandy 'blue flag' beach lies just a mile away; and if the wind
is right, the waves will be perfect for surfing. On the west side of the
beach lies a little fishing harbour and Bunagee Pier.
Some of the local activities would include:
Walking, fishing, surfing, swimming, canoeing. Golf at the nearby
Ballyliffin or Greencastle courses. There are other golf courses at
Buncrana and Redcastle and Derry.
The scenic beauty of Inishowen cannot be ignored when visiting this
unique part of Donegal and Ireland; - and a tour of the peninsula,
following the "Inishowen 100" drive is recommended. It follows a
circuitous route over approximately 100 miles around Inishowen, and
takes in virtually all the lovely coastal and mountain scenery, towns
and villages along the way. Because one will be tempted to stop many
times en-route to appreciate the views, the journey will take more than
a day to complete; - so plan accordingly!
