Moville is a picturesque town on the banks of Lough Foyle. It has two Gaelic meanings translated as either "Bun an Phobail", meaning "foot of the Foyle", or "Magh Bhille, meaning "plain of the ancient tree". In 1768, Samuel Montgomery, a rich merchant who had served as Sheriff of Derry City in 1754, bought the land where the present town lies, and built "New Park House" home to generations of the Montgomery family.
The town is still closely associated with the Montgomery family. Field Marshall Montgomery, better known as "Monty", although not born here, he spent most of his school holidays in Moville. Monty became one of the most successful Generals of the Second World War. In the early to mid-C19th, the town became the dominant centre for markets, trade and milling in the east Inishowen peninsula. The port played an important role in the town up until the middle of the C20th, and has enjoyed popularity as a seaside resort since the Victorian period.
Moville also has a long association with shipping along the Foyle; the first steamboat service between Derry and Moville began in 1832, and in the 1860s, Moville developed as a regular point of departure for emigrants on the Anchor Line ships from Derry to America. The Coastguard Station was constructed at this time in 1856 to accommodate the Coastguards and their families whilst they prevented unnecessary loss of life and improved of maritime safety. The Coastguard Station has since been converted to residential usage.
Currently on the Record of Protected Structures No. 5 retains many of the original features whilst being comprehensively modernised to cater for modern living. To the front of the building the is a large communal grassed area and a short stroll takes you to Carrickarory Pier with it's fleet of fishing boats and yachts moored offshore.
Some of the local amenities include Golf courses at Greencastle, Redcastle and Ballyliffin, Pitch & Putt, an amusement park at Leisureland, a Maritime Museum and Planetarium at Greencastle. A scenic walkway along the banks of the Foyle allows one to walk from Moville to Greencastle. Several excellent restaurants including Kealys Seafood Bar, 2010 Award Winners Seafood Circle Bar of the Year and pubs with or without traditional music can also be enjoyed.
A car ferry links Greencastle to Magilligan Point, and a scenic drive around the North Derry and Antrim coast, to famous attractions including the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, The Giants Causeway, Portrush, Dunluce Castle, the Bushmills Distillery and much more.

We had a fantastic holiday here and the house had everything we needed in it. The furniture and beds were really comfortable and the garden is so relaxing.
We don’t think there is anything you need to do to improve 5 Coastguard Station. It is a beautiful place to stay.
Thank you for providing the best holiday house we have ever stayed in!
