The home is a double storey dwelling with three bedrooms to sleep up to seven. On the ground floor, there is an entrance hall with the lounge on the right and a rear facing kitchen with a dining area and a separate utility room and toilet. Upstairs, are the three bedrooms, one with an en-suite, the landing, and a separate main bathroom. The home presents a very neat, clean and well maintained appearance. It has oil fired central heating, and all the usual modern appliances and furnishings that go to make a modern home comfortable and convenient. Outside, the rear of the property has a backyard enclosed by a wooden fence, and the front has a small patch of lawn and a tarred driveway that can accommodate up to three cars. Looking west, we can see the view shown below. The holiday home is well situated in a quiet and peaceful location, and makes an ideal touring base from which to explore the area. It is within walking distance of the shops, pubs, restaurants and harbour in Greencastle. On the way into the village, just some 200 metres away, you will see the ruins of the old castle from which the village gets its name. The castle was called 'Northburg' , and was built from a material called 'greenstone'. Next to it is a much later 'Martello' tower and fort, which has recently been renovated and converted into holiday flats. There is a another Martello tower directly across the bay, on the opposite side of Lough Foyle, at Magilligan Point. These fortifications were built in the early 19th century as defences during the Napoleonic wars. The local golf course is very close, to the north of the cottage, with its entrance also within walking distance. There is a sandy beach called 'Sweet Nellie's' just a little further on, and if you feel up to it, you can walk to another beach called 'Shroove' next to the Lighthouse at Dunagree Point. Greencastle is a small village that has seen recent growth with the development of many holiday homes in the area. It used to be a busy fishing village before EU regulations curbed the industry. It has a picturesque harbour that is protected by a pier originally built in 1813, and added to several times since then. There is the National Fisheries College, a Coast Guard station, and a newly built pilot office. The old Coastguard Station has been converted into a Maritime Museum, and it also has a planetarium. - Not to be missed when in Greencastle. The harbour area is kept busy with visitors and tourists making use of the ferry, which operates a regular daily service from the harbour to Magilligan Point, just across the water. This is the narrowest stretch on Lough Foyle before it narrows again, where it becomes the Foyle River at Derry. The ferry service saves a 78km journey around the Lough if you want to get to the other side, and visit Port Rush, Port Stewart, the Mussenden Temple at Downhill, or the lovely stretch of beach known as Benone Strand. A bit further, along this coast, visit the Giants Causeway, The Bushmills Distillery, or Dunluce castle. The Inishowen Peninsula has many scenic attractions, and a trip on the route known as the 'Inishowen 100' is recommended for seeing what's on offer. Another ferry service operates between Buncrana and Rathmullan across Lough Swilly, in the summer months. This is useful if you want to tour north west Donegal. |
