The cottage is named after the Irish for "The Rock"; - an outcrop of which, lies just to the front of the house. The property lies at an elevation on the slopes of Ballagh Hill looking south, with magnificent views over Trawbreaga Bay, Doagh Island and the Inishowen Hills rising majestically on the horizon. It is situated approximately 3km north west of Malin Town, and is very near Lagg Beach and the beautiful beach known as Five Finger Strand.
"An Carraig" is a large 'cottage', recently built, with six bedrooms that can sleep up to sixteen. It has two main bathrooms, three en-suites, and a toilet off the utility room. There is a spacious, fully fitted kitchen and dining area, a conservatory or sun-room, a living room, with its traditional open fireplace, and the utility room.
Outside, are large landscaped grounds with magnificent frontal views in a quiet and peaceful, rural setting. The paved patio area has outdoor furniture and a gas barbeque. There is an outside clothes line, and parking is not a problem.
Suitable for large families or groups, you will find all you need to make your stay pleasant and comfortable, with electricity, heating, bed-linen & towels all included.
The nearby town of Malin is a quaint little village surrounding a triangular, tree bordered village green. It has a fine hotel, with its own restaurant and two bars. There are two other pubs, a diner, two shops, beauty salon, and various other small services conducting business in the village. The village has twice received the coveted accolade of Irelands Tidiest Town.
Malin has two equestrian centres, so if you fancy an early morning gallop on the beach, or a leisurely trek in the hills, you can choose between the Malin Stables, just over the bridge towards Carndonagh, or the Rose Cottage Stables on the Lagg road, which, as it is a lot closer to the cottage, is the one we would recommend.
Within walking distance of the cottage, one can visit the Ballagh Art Studio, where works by the artists Tim Stampton and Ross Harvey may be viewed and purchased.
Keen golfers will be pleased that they will be able to enjoy their game at the famous Ballyliffin Golf Club, with its two links courses. Further; - but not more than a half hour drive, there are courses at Greencastle, Redcastle, Buncrana and Culmore in the city of Derry.
Touring the breadth of this most northerly part of Ireland has been made very convenient with the introduction of ferry services across the two Loughs separating the Inishowen peninsula from Western Donegal and Northern Ireland. A regular service operates from Greencastle across the Foyle to Magilligan Point, shortening the drivers trip by many miles and making visits to The Giants Causeway, Dunluce Castle and Bushmills Distillery worth the effort.
On the western side of Inishowen, the ferry service crosses Lough Swilly between Buncrana and Rathmullen, providing easy access to the rugged, largely unspoilt beauty of West Donegal. - although this service only operates in the summer months.
A satisfying amount of sightseeing can be accomplished without leaving Inishowen, by taking a trip on the popular "Inhishowen 100". A route which takes one on a tour around the whole peninsula, covering a distance of about 100 miles (after which it is named). Many of the coastal and inland 'scapes are simply stunningly breathtaking, and will make you realise that Inishowen is a microcosm of all that Ireland has to offer!
The Kitchen and the dining area enjoy a large spacious area, which connects to the conservatory, a utility room, the lounge and the passage to the entrance hall.
The kitchen is fully fitted, with modern storage units on a ceramic tiled floor. Appliances include an electric hob and oven, dishwasher, microwave, fridge/freezer, 4 slice toaster, a number of kettles, a mini cd/radio/stereo, TV, and essential crockery, cutlery and cookware. The utility room to the rear of the house, has its own sink, storage units, large stand alone fridge, washing machine, tumble dryer, iron and ironing board. There is also an outside clothes line.
The dining area has a table with eight chairs. There is a fold-up table on the side, which also has eight seats, should more seating be required for larger groups.
The lounge has a traditional open fireplace, a TV with DVD, and there is a large three seat sofa with two matching arm chairs on laminated wood flooring. Access is via two doors; one from the dining area of the kitchen, and the other from the entrance hall. As with all the front facing rooms of the house, one can enjoy spectacular views over Trawbreaga Bay through the large window.
The Conservatory lies just west of the kitchen, is furnished with comfortable cane furniture, and provides spectacular views of the surroundings
