Andys Cottage is a lovely secluded traditional cottage in an idyllic wooded setting near the banks of the Gweebarra River before its confluence with the Owenwee River at Doochary.
Externally, the cottage has maintained its traditional appearance, but inside it has been extensively renovated with new material replacing the old, and is in many ways, probably a big improvement over what was there before, - with maximum use made of available space, and alterations sensitively applied, in keeping with the traditional style.
Downstairs, the front entrance has a stable door which welcomes you into a spacious front room or reception area from which the other rooms lead off. This room has a solid fuel stove to warm you, and it must be a welcoming sight after a long walk in in cold weather.
The lounge occupies the west side, and it has an open fireplace and a dining area. The kitchen and a small bedroom face the rear of the cottage, and there are two upstairs bedrooms and the bathroom. The kitchen is fully fitted with modern appliances, the bathroom has new plumbing and sanitary-ware, and the cottage has oil fired central heating and is fully insulated.
Situated less than 2km from the village of Doochary on a side road off the R252 road to Fintown, and approximately 100m from the banks of the Gweebarra River, the cottage makes an ideal touring base in a quiet and peaceful area. It is perfectly suitable for a family, small groups, or an individual wanting to get away from it all, with its secluded location.
Of course, if you are a keen angler, the fishing will be your main reason for coming to Doochary, and the cottage may be a perfect home base.
The area is a Mecca for anglers, with one of the most scenic and beautiful, picturesque rivers in Donegal, if not Ireland. The Gweebarra is a twenty mile long stretch of spate river flowing from Lough Barra to Gweebarra Bay and from Doochary, includes ten miles of estuarine water.
The Gweebarra has a good run of late spring fish at the end of April, with Grilse running from the end of June and good-sized summer salmon running from August onwards. Sea trout are at their best from July and are usually taken from the estuary and the pools around the Doochary area, other noted spots on the river are the famous Mayo pool at the confluence of the Cloghernagore River, - which lies about 1.5km east of the cottage. and the Falls pool. Any of the traditional Irish shrimp flies work well on the river, as does the popular flying C.
The village of Doochary is a small village centered around the intersection of the R252 between Dungloe and Fintown, and the R254 which follows the length of the Gweebarra valley from Lough Gartan near Letterkenny, to Lettermacaward at the rivers estuary, where it joins the N56. There is a concentration of housing and buildings around this intersection, and a thin line of scattered houses following the road down towards the river estuary. There is a a shop, pub, post office and a garda station in the village. The village has has the unique distinction of twice winning the coveted national tidy towns competition, in 1996 and 1997.
Apart from fishing, the area is popular among hill walkers, and there is a challenging trail from Doochary to Fintown covering approximately 9km and taking about 3 hours, through remote country and some of Donegals finest woodland.
