The Heritage Town of Ardara

Ardara is a picturesque village and has long been a centre for hand weaving and quality knitwear. Tweed is still hand-woven in the town today on manual wooden hand looms.  It is also famous for its traditional Irish music and numerous festivals. Ardara was named ‘Best Village to Live In' by the Irish Times in 2012, and in April 2014, named one of the seven ‘Prettiest Towns in Ireland’ by Frommers.  It is an excellent base for exploring Donegals’ Wild Atlantic Way.

In Ardara you will find a warm welcome, great food, wine and regular live music sessions.  There are many quaint little shops to explore and browse in during your visit offering the best of unique Donegal crafted designs, handmade knitwear and tweeds, pottery and jewellery.

The Festival Capital of Donegal

Ardara Festivals include:

  • Ardara Agricultural Show:  It is a celebration of the richness of rural Ireland’s traditions.  It is a fantastic family event with live entertainment for kids and adults and an endless list of competitions and displays of fine local craft work.
  • Cup of Tae Festival: An annual traditional Irish music event.  It consists of traditional music sessions in the local pubs, workshops and a music summer school making up the bulk of the events, with the odd lecture thrown in.  This festival particularly concentrates on the Donegal style of fiddle playing, though there are also workshops for flute, whistle, accordion, piano and voice.
  • Ardara International Walking Festival offers short, medium & strenuous guided walks to suit all abilities.
  • The Melting Pot Festival is a multicultural celebration incorporating many different ethnic cultures.  A diverse mix of Music, Song, Dance, Food, Workshops, Exhibitions and Displays that are celebrated over a number of days in the village of Ardara.

What they say

Congratulations on an absolutely wonderful site! I was going crazy researching availability on other sites - that did not state price, no. of rooms, bathroom facilities often (even after clicking three or four links) and also did not follow a pattern for each entry. Your site is delightful. I could go through all pages of entries and with the price details given immediately did not need to waste time over entries not within my budget.
