The name is Irish for "Sanctuary".
The cottage is situated in an area known as Carrowmore, on an elevation; on the lower slopes of Farragan Hill, just to the north of, and overlooking Malin Town. The "back" of the cottage faces the "front" or south side, from which the most magnificent panoramic views of Trawbreaga Bay and the Inishowen Hills can be enjoyed.
The house occupies a large property surrounded by a gravelled drive, with an entrance that is "sign posted" by two distinctive stone pillars; - useful markers when arriving for the first time.
All the "rear" facing rooms, have magnificent views, either from the ground floor windows or upstairs sky-lights. The large, well illuminated, fully equipped kitchen has both a gas range and an Aga stove. The living area has a large open fireplace, and the sun room offers a quiet retreat with magnificent views. In good weather, one may enjoy the view from the patio area. There is also an outside hot-tub, which can offer a more relaxing way of socialising.
The cottage has much to offer, and its warm, friendly ambience, almost makes one look forward to a spell of bad weather, just to stay indoors and enjoy the space.
Malin is a quaint little village surrounding a triangular, tree bordered village green. It has a fine hotel, with its own restaurant and two bars and there are two other pubs, a diner, two shops, a beauty salon, and various other small services conducting business in the village. The village has twice received the coveted accolade of Irelands Tidiest Town.
The nearest sandy beaches are at Culdaff to the east, or the Five finger Strand and Lagg Beach to the west. Either way is an approximate ten minute drive.
Two equestrian centres are in the vicinity, so if you fancy an early morning gallop on the beach, or a leisurely trek in the hills, you can choose between the Malin Stables, just over the bridge towards Carndonagh, or the Rose Cottage Stables on the Lagg road.
There is a nearby golf driving range a little further, on the Carndonagh road. The famous Ballyliffin Golf club; with its two links courses is only a fifteen minute drive away. Other golf courses in Inishowen, are at Greencastle, Redcastle and Buncrana.
Near the Ballyliffin Golf course, on the Isle of Doagh; a visit to the "Famine Village" is recommended. It's outdoor museum with displays and models depicting Ireland as it was in the 19th century, particularly during the great famine, which lost much of the population at the time. The centre transforms itself into "Santa's Lapland" in November/December, an event which is extremely popular; - and for which early booking is essential.
Also on Doagh Island, one can view the ruins of Carraickabraghy Castle, perched on a rock overlooking the mouth of Trawbreaga Bay where it flows into the Atlantic. Nearby, a blowhole called the "Hissing Rock" ejects a plume of water high into the air at regular intervals when the tide is high.
Malin Head; is a ten minute drive north west. It is Irelands most northerly point, and is marked by an old lookout tower on top of a hill known as Banba's Crown. From here, there are breathtaking views looking south over Pollan Bay towards the Inishowen Hills. On a clear day, the outer islands of the Scottish Hebrides become visible to the east, especially Islay and Jura. To the west one can make out Tory island; - and Inishtrahull Sound, with its lighthouse, lies just to the north.
The fully fitted kitchen includes range style and aga style cookers, a large integrated fridge/freezer, dishwasher, microwave, kettle, toaster and essential crockery, cutlery and cookware.
A separate utility room has the washing machine and tumble dryer, iron and ironing board. There is an outside clothes line.
A large rectangular dining table has seating for 10, while a smaller round table in the living area seats 4.
The lounge is integrated with the kitchen. It has a large open fireplace, three seat and two seat sofas with matching arm chair, and other seating. The TV has a DVD and VHS video, and there is a collection of video material for viewing.
There are doors connecting to one of the ground floor bedrooms, and to the conservatory or sun room, which can be seen in the lower picture.
The sun room, also includes a set of matching 3 and 2 seat sofas with an arm chair.
All the forward (south) facing rooms have superb panoramic views looking over Trawbreaga Bay and the Inishowen Hills
(The upstairs landing is another alternative space which has two matching leather bound couches and a TV, with sky-light windows offering the view
