Ballyboes Cottage - Greencastle

Sea ViewsPets AllowedOpen Fire

Ballyboes is a luxury newly built designer cottage, close to the fishing port of Greencastle and the beaches of Stroove. The cottage has beautiful views over Lough Foyle and the golf course. This is the ideal base for a family or golf holiday in Donegal and with the car ferry services in operation at Greencastle, a whole range of top attractions, including the Giant's Causeway, are within easy reach by car.

The cottage is built and furnished to a very high standard and has a real charm that will make you never want to leave. There are oak floors throughout, with tasteful furniture and a great working kitchen. The whole house is very bright and the open plan layout (the living room ceiling goes up to the roof) gives a lovely feel.

The bathroom is beautifully designed with old-style bath and a separate shower room with powerful shower. Both bedrooms are spacious, tastefully designed and comfortable. The living room has panoramic views and features open fire and wall mounted flat screen tv.

The views are second to none – Ballyboes overlooks Greencastle golf course, Lough Foyle, Magilligan beach and Stroove lighthouse. There is a large patio and garden - all with great views. The house is ideally located just off a side road of the main Greencastle-Stroove road. You will simply love the house and the location.

Within 2 km, or walking distance, a few local pubs can be visited; The 'Drunken Duck' is possibly the better known one; and it also has a fine restaurant specialising in sea food. 'Sean-Tíghe's' and Michael John's are two other local pubs. A little further in Greencastle you will find others; - and a drive to nearby Moville will yield greater variety, including fast food, Chinese, fine restaurants, pubs, and more. If that's not enough, a short trip to the city of Derry, should satisfy most, with the addition of night clubs, discos, theatres and cinemas.

Greencastle

Greencastle is small, vibrant coastal fishing village, that is slowly turning into a holiday venue as more self catering homes are built in the area. Do visit the harbour area, The Maritime Museum and Planetarium, and the old castle ruin, from which the village gets its name.

The two nearest beaches are at Stroove (pronounced 'Shroove'), to the north, and just west of the lighthouse at Dunagree Point; with the other one, just below to the east, and north of of Greencastle Golf Course, called 'Sweet Nellie's'. Bigger and more spectacular beaches are within a twenty minute drive: Kinnegoe Bay is a spectacular beach, surrounded by high ground and cliffs. It is here that a Spanish Armada Vessel, La Trinidad Valencera, sank in 1588. It was a vessel of Venetian origin, and one of the biggest in the fleet.

A little further west will bring you to the beach at Culdaff. It is a lovely stretch of sand, about 1km in length, and it has 'blue flag status'. Great for a day on the beach, with a safe play area for kids near the car park.

Beaches

Another great beach, within view of the cottage is called 'Benone Strand'. However it lies on the other side of the Foyle. To get there, you take the ferry from Greencastle across to Magilligan Point and a short ten minute drive from there should get you to the beach. The clean, firm, golden sands of Benone Strand are without rocks, shingle or seaweed and are 'preceded by the glorious natural formations of Benone's sand dunes'. With a supervised playground, outdoor paddling pool and golf club, a fun filled day is guaranteed. It is a haven for nature lovers as the entire area is a paradise for the study of botany, entomology and shells.

While on this side of the Foyle, you may want to extend your trip with some sightseeing; - to Downhill, Portstewart, Portrush, The Giant's Causeway, Bushmills Distillery and Dunluce Castle. On your return, stop at the recommended 'Point Bar & Restaurant' at Magilligan's Point: - just make sure you don't miss the last ferry crossing!
