Barn Owl Cottage - Glenties

Barn Owl Cottage, has been restored and updated recently and offers light comfortable, self catering accommodation in the countryside 1.5 miles south of the Donegal village of Glenties. The river Owenea flows through the farm and the wood deck area allows you to savour the peaceful surrounds. It is an ideal retreat for honeymooners, retired or other couples or small families who wish to get away from it all. Situated on the main N56 road between two villages Glenties and Ardara only 6 miles between the two.

The village of Glenties is a five times winner of Ireland's Tidy Towns competition. Located in the heart of the Donegal Mountains, at the meeting point of the two glens on the northwest edge of the Blue Stack Mountains, it is the largest centre of population in the Parish of Inniskeel. Surrounded by majestic mountains on three sides, the western side of the valley opens out into the Atlantic Ocean. With its abundance of trees and bushes, contrasting sharply with the treeless mountains of the approaches, the town has been described as an oasis. All around the glens and mountains are scenic walks and drives which tempt the visitor into exploration by car, bicycle or foot. Along the rugged coast are bays, beaches and beautiful coastal scenery.

Festivals and Events

Barn Owl holiday home is also a central base to attend the various annual festivals and other organised events that take place in this part of Donegal. In Glenties there is the Patrick McGill Summer School, the Harvest Fair Festival and the Fiddlers Weekend. In Dungloe there is the Internationally renowned Mary from Dungloe Festival and a festival dedicated to the local writer Peadar O'Donnell. In Portnoo there is an annual seafood festival.

• Fish for brown, sea and rainbow trout in some of the numerous lakes and rivers in the Glenties and Dungloe areas

• Golf at Narin & Portnoo Golf Club or play pitch and putt at Sandfield near Ardara (9km)

• Try surfing at the Dooey Surf School based at Dooey Strand

• Visit the St Connell's Museum & Heritage Centre in Glenties

• Find numerous peaceful roads, country lanes and mountain tracks to walk

• Take a trip on the wonderful narrow gauge railway that runs along the shores of Lough Finn at Fintown

• Visit Dunlewey Lakeside Centre - Facilities include restaurant, tea-room, craft shop, adventure play areas, pets & animals, storytelling, boat trips on Dunlewey Lake, guided tours and weaving demonstrations.

• Take a day trip to Aranmore Island.

• Visit Glenveagh National Park, with 16,000 hectares of mountains, lakes, wood and bogs. Glenveagh contains the largest red deer population in Europe. Within the National Park Glenveagh Castle and gardens are well worth a visit on their own
• Scenic drive to Ardara via Glengesh pass
