The Olde Glen Bar in Glen village is a true gem of an Irish country pub – with the added bonus of a superb restaurant. The McLaughlin family bar is reputed to be almost 400 years old. Low ceilings, weathered bar counter and furniture, open fires with one bar room leading into another behind – all combine to create a cosy and relaxing atmosphere.

The restaurant and kitchen are more modern, having been added in relatively recent years. Although modern the restaurant is nevertheless beautifully decorated and again atmospheric.
There is no advance booking for this popular restaurant. However during the height of the summer season there is two sittting every evening. And,with such a cosy pub, the wait for a table will be an enjoyable experience itself.
The menu is simple and yet imaginative with a predominance of local produce especially fresh fish. Dishes include pan-fried sea bass with crispy prawns, halibut with dauphinoise potatoes, plaice with crab sauce and also local Hereford beefsteaks. There is also superb homemade pâté and seafood chowder. Names are written on a blackboard, and as food runs out the board is wiped clean, dish by dish.All this and a good wine list, great service and good value too. No wonder it’s popular.
The Glen Bar is such a great wee bar with a lot of atmosphere and then the hidden gem at the back is the restaurant which is beautifully decorated and again atmospheric. The menu has a vast array of fish a steak dish and a few chicken dishes. I choose the monkfish- it was beautiful and mouthwatering so much so that my mouth is watering writing this!!!
Anyhow take the chance there is no booking but we were there on a Fri night in September and there was a few people milling about.
Also it is reasonably priced and worth every penny.

Food is the domain of the McLaughlin family, and their mix of prawns, halibut and plaice, with meaty staples such as local Hereford beefsteaks, has necessitated two sittings. It’s both modern and a blast from the past. Hence the response when I called looking to have some pictures emailed: “Sorry, we don’t even have a computer.”
