Sailing

Selkie Sailing has a wide variety of small sailing boats to cater fo all levels of experience – from the novice to the experienced sailor. Sailing is a great pass time as well as a great foundation sport for other water sports, like windsurfing and kite surfing etc. Prices have been worked out with families with the recession in mind.

Kayaking

Selkie Sailing has a number of sea kayaks, to suit different abilities. Kayaking is becoming an increasingly popular pastime. The local Derrybeg area has a rugged coastline dotted with small islands, sea caves and hidden coves. Kayaking provides a unique oppertunity to see the rich variety of local bird and marine wildlife from a different perspective.

Raft building

Raft building is a team building exercise which allows the newly acquired skills to be put to practical use afterwards. This is a group activity.

Wind Surfing

Selkie Sailing instructors enjoy all types of water sports, and so a few wind surfers are available…

Camping
Sail, kayak or boat to an offshore island and camp. Selkie Sailing has an island which makes trudging all the gear a little easier, as the basics are already there! This activity can be arranged to meet the individual/group preference.

Donegal Pens

Two young brothers running a small wooden pen business have gone from strength to strength in recent times. It all happens in their parents garden shed which was converted into a workshop where the boys turn wood such as bog oak, ash, yew, elm, and beech into pens that they sell all over the world on their website.

Ronan and Conor McGarvey from Loughanure in West Donegal use their evenings and weekends after they’ve done their school homework to make wooden pens through the woodturning process.

As well as selling one to singer Daniel O’Donnell, they’ve also presented pens to Brian Cowen, Eamon Gilmore and Gerry Adams.

The pair could be the country’s youngest entrepreneurs having already sold over six hundred pens at around €15.95 each, making them between €3,000 – €4,000 which has been reinvested in new equipment for their workshop.

Their father Eoin McGarvey, a postman in Donegal, related how the boys had become hooked after a visit to a woodturning fair at Junction 1.

“After they’d been, they were pestering me ‘Can we get a lathe! Can we get a lathe!’ We thought it was a fad but they were persistent so eventually we got a small lathe and touched up the garden shed a bit with more lighting and they started making pens.”

The two boys managed to sell enough pens over one summer in local shops that they were able to upgrade their equipment and since then the business has grown. Their father continued:

“They keep whatever profit themselves and at the moment they want to buy a quad bike although I’m not sure about the safety of that! They’re really passionate about it and it seems to be something they want to continue doing when they’re older. They’d take a hammer and a nail any day over a Playstation or an Xbox.”

Background

An Grianán Theatre opened its doors to the public in October 1999, and the official gala opening took place on 12th November 1999. Magic of the Musicals was the first show performed on the An Grianán stage –one of the largest stages in Ireland. The theatre is operated and managed by the Letterkenny Theatre Management Company Ltd. on behalf of Donegal County Council and Letterkenny UDC. The theatre is open to the public all day and one can avail of the excellent café and bar, view art exhibitions or, of course, attend a show. An Grianán can also be used as a corporate venue, offering advanced technical and catering facilities. The foyers and public galleries are used as an exhibition space.

Facilities

The auditorium in an Grianán Theatre has 383 very comfortable seats on a sloping floor. It was designed to provide loads of legroom and clear sightlines to the stage from every seat. The theatre also has one of Ireland’s largest stage areas and an impressive array of state-of-the-art technical facilities – from lighting to projection to sound. This makes it an ideal setting for getting any message across, and for people to concentrate on the topic at hand.
 
The rehearsal room in an Grianán is the perfect place for staging more intimate meetings, training sessions, interviews, auditions and workshops. This highly flexible, fully equipped space accommodates up to 40 people or up to 25 for a round-table meeting.
 
The theatre has a cafe which is open all day, serving full meals, snacks and coffee. A full bar service is available before and after each performance.
 
An Grianán has full facilities for people with disabilities including designated seating in the auditorium, lift and specially adapted WC. There is also an inductive loop hearing system. Hearing aids should be set to the ‘T’ feature. There is ample and spacious parking to the rear of the Theatre, for both cars and coaches. Patrons can also take advantage of free Wi-Fi to stay in touch with the digital world
 

A Community Theatre and Major Arts Venue

An Grianán Theatre is both a community theatre and major arts venue for the northwest. From the start it has been used as a venue for major local festivals and events. It is extensively used during the annual Earagail Arts Festival which is now recognised as one of the leading Irish arts and culture events. The theatre was also used to host the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, in the summers of 2005 and 2006. In 2007 it hosted the International Pan Celtic Festival – a festival that celebrates celebrates the Celtic cultures of Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Cornwall, Brittany and the Isle of Man.
 
An Grianán is distinctive amongst regional venues for its success as a theatre producer. The theatre has produced plays by writers such as Brian Friel, John B Keane, Cathal O Searcaigh and Paul Boyd. Its youth and education programme has also proved hugely successful.

Music and Comedy Venue

An Grianán has attracted a number of well-known musicians over the years – The Frames, Josh Ritter, Aslan, Sharon Shannon, Eddie Reader and David Kitt to name but a few. Top class comedians who have appeared at the venue include Dara Ó Briain, Jimmy Carr, Dylan Moran, Jason Byrne, Tommy Tiernan , and Ardal O’Hanlon

Donegal Shore Festival - Kincasslagh, Co Donegal

The Donegal Shore Festival was first held in Kincasslagh as far back as 1995. The Festival was inspired by local singing sensation – Daniel O’Donnell – and his song “My Donegal Shore”. The five day festival regularily attracts up to 7000 people to Kincasslagh and is worth up to €4 million to the local economy.

The Donegal Shore Festival is a five day festival of country and traditional Irish music along with heritage trails, a ceili mor, a country concert, charity walk, monster quiz, whist drive , an Irish night and the highlight – the Belle of the Ball Dance

The festival, which was revived in 2011 after a 4 year absence, gives fans of Daniel O’Donnell a chance to see him perform on home turf. Some of the early concert festivals raised funds for the Romanian Challenge Appeal.To this day Daniel has championed the Romanian Challenge Appeal, a charity that helps orphaned Romanian children re-establish themselves within society.

Belle of the Ball and the “Mystery Guest”

The highlight of the Donegal Shore Festival weekend was always the gala Belle of the Ball on the Sunday night, where Daniel’s “mystery guest” for the night was revealed. The mystery guest was traditionally kept a closely-guarded secret from the home town crooner. Over the ears some top household names in the tv and music industries have been the mystery guest. These have included Coronation Street’s Vera Duckworth and Amanda Barrie, MEP Dana, TV personality Gloria Hunniford and Mandy Dingle from Emmerdale Farm. Prehaps two of the most famous mystery guests were Sir Cliff Richard and country and western legend Loretta Lynn – ” The Coalminer’s Daughter”. However the only time Daniel was reduced to tears was when five children from the orphanage his charity supports in Romania came over as his mystery guests.

Over the years the music line-up in the festival has reguarily featured the following artists( in addition to Daniel!) – Margo, Hugo Duncan, Shaun Cuddy, Michael English, John McNicholl, Sean o’Farrell and Susan McCann. Conal Gallen is another regular entertainer.

Buncrana, County Donegal, Ireland

Buncrana is located at the mouth of the Crana River on the east bank of Lough Swilly. The town’s Irish name means “Foot of the River Crana” and one of its delights is the walk under beech, maple and lime trees beside the brown waters of the River Crana. It is the principal town of the Inishowen Peninsula and has a wide range of shops, bars, hotels and restaurants. A new car ferry service, in operation June – September, connects Buncrana with Rathmullan on the opposite side of the Lough.
