Bridge Cottage is a 200 year old traditional thatched cottage which offers a unique Irish holiday experience in the heart of the wild and beautiful Donegal landscape  -  a landscape renowned for its rugged coastline, windswept peninsulas and miles of sandy beaches.

This warm and comfortable two bedroom accommodation has been carefully restored with a sensitive blend of old and new. It combines the relaxed and peaceful atmosphere of a cosy turf stove, wooden ceiling and stone tiled floor with all modern conveniences. The cottage was newly rethatched in 2013. We have also re-carpeted the interior.

A large sun terrace at the rear of the cottage offers the perfect spot to relax and unwind with beautiful views of sheep grazing on the neighbouring hillside. Adjoining the terrace, there is an enclosed garden/paddock bordered by a stream. There is plenty of space for a tent for extra accommodation or for night time adventures for the children.

The cottage is situated in a tranquil, rural location, surrounded by hills and lovely open countryside but is only a five minute drive from the village shops and pubs at Dunkineely and two miles from the sea.  You can use pedal power to visit these local amenities - 4 bicycles are provided at the cottage.

Surrounding Area

There are several unspoilt beaches within easy reach of the cottage and the lighthouse at St. John's point, just to the south of the cottage, lies at the end of a wild and scenic peninsula. The highest cliffs in Europe at Sleive League are easily accessible and the Maghera caves at the end of a long silver beach are well worth a visit.

The holiday cottage is just over 10km from Killybegs which is renowned as one of Ireland’s premier fishing ports. Donegal Town lies 20km to the east is of great historical interest. Donegal Castle stands beside The Diamond, overlooking the River Eske. Guided historical tours of Donegal Town take place on a daily basis during the summer and the Waterbus takes you around Donegal Bay. The ruins of Donegal Abbey, situated on the bay, are open to the public. Just 15km to the north of the cottage is the Heritage Town of Ardara. This is a traditional centre for weaving in Donegal and is also renowned for traditional music.

Inland, the scenery is wild and unspoilt with stunning vistas of mountains, lakes, glens and woodlands. The Glenveagh National Park and the exhilarating peaks of the Bluestack Mountains are within driving distance of the cottage. There are opportunities for superb walking, cycling and fishing, (sea and river), in the area as well as horse riding, golf, scuba diving, sea safaris and listening to traditional Irish music in the local bars.

The cottage is available to rent all year round at very reasonable prices.

What they say

We came to Donegal to spend time in a traditional cottage with peat fire and Irish music amidst wild scenery and beaches. The holiday exceeded our expectations. Bridge Cottage is delightful - a real treat in a stunning area.
