Carrowhugh Cottages ::

Tariff 2008

About 2km north east of Greencastle, on the slopes of a hill called "Crocknasmug", Carrowhugh Cottages overlook the mouth of Lough Foyle. Looking across the bay into Northern Ireland, this is the narrowest point across the Foyle before it broadens into a wide expanse of water that only narrows again as it approaches Derry and turns into the River Foyle.

The views are spectacular, and one can see across to the pier at Magilligan Point, where the ferry from Greencastle makes its connection, the lovely stretch of beach known as Benone Strand, and the Mussenden Temple, perched precariously on the edge of a cliff at Downhill; on to the Seaside resort of Port Stewart.

The two cottages have their similarities and differences:
One is a
traditional style thatch, (with the blue doors) which originally only had two rooms, but now has a slate roofed extension which doubles its size, allowing for the inclusion of an additional bedroom and a bathroom. It comprises 2 bedrooms, a bathroom, a sitting room, and a large kitchen/living room area. It has retained much of its original 'look', with authentic furnishings and decoration to match the period; - and will delight anyone who fancies spending some time in an original Irish cottage.

The other cottage (with the green door) is a pleasing, modern, compact two storey dwelling, with 3 upstairs bedrooms and a separate toilet, a downstairs bathroom, fully equipped kitchen area with sitting room and fireplace. Both cottages have oil fired central heating.

Greencastle, the nearest town, is a commercial fishing port and has the NationalGreencastle Harbour - Carrowhugh Cottages, Greencastle, Inishowen, Donegal, Ireland Fisheries College. It has a picturesque harbour area, and there is a ferry service crossing the Foyle on a regular basis: - convenient for car trips to the Giants Causeway, Bushmills, Dunluce Castle, and other attractions along the Antrim Coast in Northern Ireland. (...and saving an additional 78km by avoiding the drive around the Foyle!)

The town almost certainly got its name from the old castle, which in turn may have got its name from the green freestone with which it was built. The castle, which is now a ruin, was known as the De Burgo Castle, and was built in 1305 as a base to provide a stronghold for Norman power in the North West. It was named "Northburg" and was built on the site of a much older fortress. There is a more modern Martello Fort beside the ruin, built by the British during the Napoleonic Wars to stop a possible French Fleet from invading.

With the decline of the fishing industry, Greencastle has become more of a "holiday village". There has been much building of new homes in recent years. A Maritime Museum and a Planetarium in the town are well worth a visit. There is also a small golf course near the shore.
A few km down the road is the larger town of
Moville, where one can enjoy a variety of restaurants and pubs.

Hill walking has become an increasingly popular activity, and there are some spectacular walks in the area. A rewarding coastal walk would be along the cliffs from Inishowen Head to  Kinnegoe Bay, with its beautiful beaches and the site of the wreck of the Spanish Armada vessel, the "La Trinidad Valecera", which went down in 1588.
