Castle View is a modern 3 bedroom holiday home located near the southern shores of Inch Island on Lough Swilly, Co Donegal. The holiday home takes its name from the nearby ruins of an old O’ Doherty clan castle. Like the castle, the holiday home enjoys panoramic views over the southern reaches of Lough Swilly and the surrounding countryside and is within easy walking distance of a small secluded beach, Mill Bay.

The holiday home has comfortably accommodation for 6 people. The spacious open plan area on the ground floor has large windows providing ample natural light. The kitchen is fully equipped with modern appliances. Outside there are large gardens to the front and rear with an enclosed area ideal for young children.

A Tranquil Base For Exploring Inishowen and Derry City

Inch Island itself is a small island lying just off the Donegal coast at Burt at the start of the Inishowen peninsula . It is connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. It is a quiet place with beautiful and diverse scenery - from the fertile lands on the eastern side  to the rugged hills and sheltered coves on the western side.  It has a small working fishing harbour, a Napoleonic era fort built into the cliffs and the ruins of an old castle which is located close to the holiday home. The castle was once the property of the O'Doherty Clan of Inishowen.  The castle is built on a cliff edge overlooking the Swilly and dates from about the mid 15th century and although it is mostly ruins there are parts of it still in good repair.

Inch Island is also a birdwatcher's paradise. It has a designated wildfowl sanctuary and has large manmade lake filled with swans, geese and many other species of bird. Three species, Whooper Swan, Greenland White-fronted Goose and Greylag Goose, occur in numbers of international importance. This is the area where the swans make their Irish landfall in autumn on their return from breeding grounds in Iceland and there are some excellent vantage points from which to view these majestic birds.

The holiday home is an ideal base for a relaxing getaway and yet it just a 15 minute drive from the centre of the historic walled city of Derry – UK City of Culture 2013. It is just 5 minutes drive from the quaint village of Fahan which has a large marina and a fine sandy beach. A further 5 minutes is the large coastal town of Buncrana – the main town on the beautiful Inishowen peninsula.

What they say

We’ve had the opportunity to stay for a bit more than a week in Castle View this summer, a beautiful house located on Inch Island, and we wish we could have stayed more !

The house is very comfortable, and great for kids : there are lots of games inside and the children have also enjoyed the company of the cows and sheep on the other side of the fence ! The rooms are very spacious and the kitchen very well equipped to cook great dinners with local Irish products. Gerry who welcomed us is a very nice person, really friendly.

Living in Castle View is a great opportunity to enjoy the quiet and peaceful atmosphere of the island, and a good base for trips around the Donegal area. Sunsets are great moments every evening, plus there is a lot to do on that small piece of land. The gentle walk in the reserve is beautiful, and the views on Lough Swilly are always different for the light is great there. Finally, an expedition with kids to the ruins of the castle is definitely a must do !

We really hope to return there one day for we have kept fond memories of the place !
