Loughanure: This beautifully scenic village is located in the heart if the Donegal Gaeltacht on the main Dungloe - Gweedore road, 4 miles from Dungloe. It is pleasantly set beside the 1 mile by 3 mile lake from which it takes its name: Loch an Iúir means 'lake of the yew tree'. It is two miles from Donegal International Airport which is serviced daily by Aer Arann from Dublin Airport and a 45 minute drive behind scenic Errigal Mountain to or from Letterkenny . It is thriving Gaelic speaking area with a very high standard of Traditional music everywhere you go. The area is home to the Brennan Family (Clannad & Enya) as well as Daniel O’Donnell. Musical Sessions are not hard to find. It is an area that is far off the Tourist Trail yet there is much to do. Dunlewey Lakeside Centre, Glenveagh National Park and several quality golf courses are nearby. There are row boats, canoes and kayaks for rent.
The area is famous for its miles of
sandy beaches. Outdoor
enthusiasts can enjoy a range of activities including fishing, cycling
and hill walking. Golfers are spoilt for choice with the courses
at Gweedore, Cruit Island, Lake fishing is well organized with competitions being held locally throughout the year by Loughanure Angler's Club where permits are available. You are within 10 minutes of some of the most breathtaking White Sand Beaches in all of Europe - many with blue flag status. There are numerous golf courses nearby. Pony trekking and hiking are also available. |
