The cottage lies on the Golf
Course Road, about 5km north east of Letterkenny, and close
to
the entrance of Letterkenny Golf Club. It is situated on a height
with scenic views overlooking the
southern end of Lough Swilly. The Lough
extends some 40km to the north, where it opens to the Atlantic.
Originally a farm house, it
retains much of its original character and
charm, and has a warm friendly aura about it.
The home is well kept and maintained by the owner, who lives close
by. (You may be welcomed by the lovely aroma of fresh baked scones or
apple-pie on your arrival!)
Except for a modern fitted kitchen, and a new bathroom,
many of the
original fixtures, fittings and furniture are still intact and
functional.
The cottage has three upstairs bedrooms to sleep five. There is a
bathroom, a kitchen, utility room, a lounge and the main living room and
dining area; - the original kitchen must have once been in this room.
There are a number of outbuildings, some of which would be
suitable for storage of items like golf clubs, fishing rods and other
sporting gear.
There are three fireplaces, although only the one in the main living
room tends to be used. An abundant fuel supply in a nearby shed is
available.
Letterkenny takes its name from the Irish " Leitirceanainn " - meaning the "Hillside of the O'Cannons" - the
O'Cannons being the last of the ancient chieftains of Tir Conaill.
Another derivation of the name Letterkenny from the Irish "Leitir
Ceann-Fhoinn" could possibly be the "Fairheaded".
Letterkenny is the main shopping town in Donegal with a lively night
life and has a wide range of pubs restaurants and shops to choose from.
The nearby Letterkenny Golf Club has a
beautiful 18 hole, 6239 yards, Par 70 Parkland Championship course. The
course takes advantage of natural variances of elevation with four holes
wrapped around the banks of Lough Swilly and the 'top seven' holes
affording the golfer a panoramic view of the Lough-side and the
picturesque garland hills and wooded countryside. Nestled within 147
acres of tranquil bliss the golfer's game will be shared with no-one but
nature and its splendid beauty.
Other attractions in the immediate locality include horse riding, bicycle
hire, theatre, cinema, pitch and putt, indoor activity centres for
children, leisure centre with swimming pool and tennis courts.
