Dúnán - Bunbeg

Open FireCot & Highchair

Dúnán is a newly built holiday home set in a secluded spot approx 1 mile from the Gaeltacht village of Bunbeg in West Donegal.  Furnished and decorated to a high standard the house is situated in a rugged and beautiful corner of Donegal where nature abounds. The Cainéal or Crolly estuary is a short walk away. Red Deer and Cuckoo come and go with the seasons.

The four large bedrooms comfortably accommodate eleven. Upstairs the two ensuite bedrooms each accommodate a double and single bed. Downstairs there are two large bedrooms, a family bathroom, kitchen, utility room, living room and a spacious hallway. This holiday home can easily accommodate a large family or a group and is a tranquil haven yet close to all amenities.

The Bunbeg Area

The house is convenient to all local amenities including shops and pubs such as  Hiúdaí Beags and Seán ógs, An Chúirt, Óstán Ghaoth Dobhair and Seaview hotels.  Leo’s Tavern of Clannad and Enya fame is five minutes away by car.
Bunbeg harbour and the stunning beaches of Magheraclogher, Machaire Gathlán and Port Arthur are also a short drive away.

The house is situated in a Gaeltacht or mainly Irish speaking area where the Gaelic language and culture are a way of life. The Irish colleges of Rannafast, Loch an Iúir and Magheraroarty are close at hand. There are also adult or family Irish language courses organized during the summer months.

The area is famed for its traditional musicians and singers – Altan, Clannad and Aoife Ní Fhearraigh among others and there are regular sessions and concerts throughout the summer months. The Scoil Gheimhridh Frankie Kennedy / Frankie Kennedy Winter School  is an annual  music school and gathering held at the end of December when the many pubs are alive to the sound session music suitable for young and old as well as family groups with children.

There are many fine places to eat out in this area.  An Chúirt or Óstán Ghaoth Dobhair are recommended and if you are after good pub grub then Teach Jack and Seán Ógs are a safe bet. A little bit further afield and fresh fish is always on the menu at the Lobster Pot and Skippers in Burtonport or Caisleáin Óir in Anagry. Danny Minnies also in Anagry is well regarded.

Local Activities

The leisure centres at Óstán Ghaoth Dobhair and An Chúirt hotel are of an excellent standard and essential particularly on bad weather days. There is an fine indoor soft play area at An Chúirt hotel which is open to the public. There is a well equipped large outdoor play area ‘Páirc an Phobail’ at Gaoth Dobhair Business Park and the beaches and rockpools are a natural playground for young ones for climbing and discovery. The Dúnlewey Centre  is a must for children. Meitheal Forbartha na Gaeltachta based at An Chrannóg, Gaoth Dobhair’s Irish Language and Cultural centre , organize week long Summer camps for younger children. GAA and Soccer camps are organized in July and August.

Local activities in the Gaoth Dobhair area include water sports, game and sea angling, golf, swimming and hill walking. The islands of Gola and Tory are easily accessible for a day trip. Tory, a unique island community rich in Gaelic tradition, is also a haven for seabirds and a bastion of the elusive Corncrake.  Selkie Sailing offers tuition and practical guidance for sailing, kayaking, boat handling and watersports normally at Port Arthur beach. There are four challenging golf courses within a 20km radius at Gaoth Dobhair, Cruit Island, Falcarragh and Dunfanaghy.

Seatrout and salmon run the Crolly river into Loch an Iúir where boats can be hired. The Clady is open again for salmon but is catch and return for 2012.  Further south is The Rosses Fishery which is controlled by the Rosses Anglers Association. The fishery is set in the North West of the county of Donegal and comprises over 120 lakes where salmon, seatrout and native brownies abound. Charter boats are located at Bunbeg and Burtonport for day and evening seafishing trips.

Major Attractions on your Doorstep

At the foot of Earagail, the highest mountain in Donegal, lies the village of Dún Lúiche (the fort of Lugh). Here you will find the Dunlewey Lakeside Centre  - a popular day out for young and old. Facilities include a weaving museum, farm animals, play areas, climbing wall, go-karting, canoeing, boat trips, guided tours, souvenir / craft shop and restuarant. Traditional music concerts are held each tuesday night throughout the summer in the large newly built concert venue.

Glenveagh Castle and National Park is approx 20 mins drive away and is set in a stunning position surrounded by 16000 hectares of scenic mountain terrain on the shores of loch Beith. There are beautiful gardens, guided tours, an audio visual theatre and restaurant as well as eagle exhibitions on named Sundays throughout the year.

What they say

Congratulations on an absolutely wonderful site! I was going crazy researching availability on other sites - that did not state price, no. of rooms, bathroom facilities often (even after clicking three or four links) and also did not follow a pattern for each entry. Your site is delightful. I could go through all pages of entries and with the price details given immediately did not need to waste time over entries not within my budget.
