The lounge has a solid fuel stove for added thermal efficiency, and
there is a large conservatory. The house is double glazed with oil-fired
central heating throughout. All the forward facing windows and upstairs
sky-lights afford spectacular panoramic views towards the Inishowen
hills and Trawbreaga Bay. Suitable for large families or groups, with
all the amenities provided for a comfortable stay.
Alternatively, from Malin, drive east for 6km to
Culdaff, where there is
another lovely "Blue Flag" beach. Here you will find a small fishing
harbour at Bunagee Pier, from where a boat trip can take you to Inishtrahull Island, some 6 miles off the North coast. Back in Culdaff,
a visit to McGrory's is recommended. A hotel, restaurant, music
venue, and a front and back room bar all in one establishment; - and,
you also get to enjoy fine food, good service and great craic! The famous Ballyliffin Golf Club with its popular 2 links courses is also to be found adjacent to the Isle of Doagh. Golfers are spoilt for choice in Inishowen, where there are also courses in Greencastle, Buncrana, Redcastle, and Derry. Ballyliffin itself, has 5 hotels. A little further south, the road takes you to Clonmany, set in the Inishowen hills, and nearby, you may want to view the lovely Glenevin Waterfall.
If you head west, from Clonmany, you can drive over a pass in the hills
called the Mamore Gap, and then down to Dunree, where you can see
Dunree Fort overlooking Lough Swilly, and visit the military museum
there, with some big naval guns on display; once deployed as a defence,
when the Lough had a more strategic value. (In the first world war, the
British Grand Fleet took shelter in the Lough.) A similar ferry service operates across Lough Swilly between Buncrana and Rathmullen, where an old fort houses a permanent exhibition depicting the event known as the "Flight of the Earls"; an important event in Irish History, and commemorating its 400th anniversary in 2007 |
