Elly House is located on the hillside to the north west of Rathmullan village and has truly superb views over the surrounding countryside and across Lough Swilly to the hills of Inishowen. You are free to explore and ramble through the sixty acres of farmland and forestry belonging to the house - ideal for the hill walking enthusiast.

 

Local Attractions

Elly House is situated in a quiet and peaceful rural location yet is only a ten minute drive from Kerrykeel (3 miles) and the seaside village of Rathmullan (3 miles) with its wonderful sandy beach, lively local pubs - often featuring traditional music - and car ferry service to Buncrana. Visit the local Flight of The Earls heritage centre which tells of the last days of the great Irish chieftains or take a trip on Lough Swilly aboard one of the charter boats which operate from the small marina at the pier. The pier is also popular with water sport enthusiasts and sea anglers.

The local Golden Sands Equestrian Centre organises pony trekking sessions and holds week long courses for children in horse grooming and care. For the golf enthusiast, it's only a 15 minute drive to the magnificent 18 hole links course at Portsalon while Ireland's second oldest golf course, Otway (9 holes) is only a 5 minute drive away.

Surrounding Area

Donegal's largest town, Letterkenny, is a 25 minute drive along the coast of Lough Swilly. This thriving town has a wide selection of shops and restaurants, and also features, a multi screen cinema, An Grianan Theatre, swimming pool, a lovely town park and Arena 7, a new kids adventure playground.

Crossing the Swilly on the car ferry from the pier at Rathmullan you arrive at Buncrana which also has a leisure centre with swimming pool and one of Donegal's finest outdoor kid's play area. Travelling onwards from Buncrana enables you to visit the many attractions Inishowen has to offer:

  • The Gun's of Dunree - military museum
  • Ballyliffin Golf Club - very popular links course
  • Greencastle Maritime Museum - the history of seafaring in the area
  • Doagh Island Famine Village - tells the story of the famine in Donegal

If you venture further and take the car ferry from Greencastle you will be able to visit The Giant's Causeway and Bushmill's Distillery, two of Northern Ireland's top attractions

The wooden beams were recently made from some of the mature pine trees which surround this traditional farmhouse. Throughout the house many of the original wooden ceilings and doors have been carefully restored ensuring a continuity of a long tradition of skilled carpentry associated with this house.

The main lounge is to the front of the house and enjoys lovely views over the surrounding countryside. As well as a large open fireplace this room features the original wooden ceiling of the farmhouse - modern comforts come in the form of leather furniture, a 28 inch widescreen tv and dvd player.
A second living room on the ground floor has a pool table, open fireplace, tv and video - an ideal room for the kids!

The house has 4 bedrooms on the upper floor to sleep a total of 9 people.

Elly House is located in the hills surrounding Rathmullan village and has superb views over a wide valley towards Lough Swilly and the Inishowen Hills beyond. To take full advantage of this aspect, a conservatory was added to the house during recent renovations and this now provides a relaxing, brightly lit area which takes full advantage of the natural beauty of the coastal countryside.
