Galwolie is a charming, traditional Irish Cottage, built around 1900. Named after a nearby hill, it originally had a thatch roof, which was replaced by slate-tile at some stage in the past. It has a living room with an  open fireplace, a main bedroom with an open fireplace, and a rear facing kitchen, bathroom and a second bedroom.

It comfortably sleeps four, though there is a sleeper couch for more. Fixtures and furnishings are in keeping with the style and period of the cottage. It has been restored and renovated, and includes some modern features like electricity, plumbing and central heating, to make for a comfortable and pleasant stay.

It is situated on the lower slopes of a hill called Croaghleconnel, about 600 metres from the banks of the Gweebarra River, and 2.5km south west of the village of Doochary or 6km north east of Lettermacaward. The cottage is well concealed by surrounding trees, with a coniferous forest in front, - and one can sense that it is a magical place of calm, peaceful serenity. A perfect location for those who want to get away from it all.  Perhaps suitable for artists, or individuals needing a place to reflect and meditate. Look out for the fairies.

Fishing

On the other hand, the area is a Mecca for anglers, with one of the most scenic and beautiful, picturesque rivers in Donegal, if not Ireland. The Gweebarra is a twenty mile long stretch of spate river flowing from Lough Barra to Gweebarra Bay and includes ten miles of estuarine water.

The Gweebarra has a good run of late spring fish at the end of April, with Grilse running from the end of June and good-sized summer salmon running from August onwards. Sea trout are at their best from July and are usually taken from the estuary and the pools around the Doochary area, other noted spots on the river are the famous Mayo pool at the confluence of the Cloghanagore River and the Falls pool. Any of the traditional Irish shrimp flies work well on the river, as does the popular flying C.

Surroundings

The beauty of the area, particularly the Gweebarra valley, along the rivers length, from its source at Lough Barra in the Glenveigh National Park, to its mouth at Gweebarra Bay, invites you to get out of the car and put on your hiking boots, or get on your bike, or go on horseback, and explore the area. Dont forget your camera.

As well as various levels of hill walking in the Bluestack and Derryveagh mountains, you can surf off the breathtaking Dooey Beach where there is also a Surf School to improve your skills. If indoor activities is more your cup of tea, this area is renowned for its traditional music and arts, with the Mary of Dungloe International Festival in the summer, and nearby Glenties hosting the Patrick MacGill Summer School.

Doochary is a small village with a scattering of houses concentrated around the intersection where the R252 and R254 roads cross. The local shop also serves as the post office, and there is  a pub, Teach Gleann Ceo.
In 1997 Doochary was selected as a Tidy Town, a prestigious award coveted by towns and villages throughout Ireland. Doochary is ideally places as a touring base and has a clean and neat appearance. Its neighbours are Dungloe to the west, Fintown to the East, Maas to the south and Glendowan to the North. It is located in the parish of Dungloe.

What they say

Peace, tranquillity, great location, superb scenery. The perfect place to unwind – distress and recharge the batteries. Only drawback is a week is not long enough. We’ll definitely be back.
