Gartan Cottage is just 1km from Glebe House and Glebe Gallery. Glebe house is a fine Regency House dating from 1828. The renowned portrait and landscape painter Derek Hill lived and worked there from 1954 until he presented the house and his art collection to the Irish state in 1981. Hill's former studio has been converted into a modern gallery with changing exhibitions while his art collection is shown in his former home. The collection includes 300 works by leading 20th century artists; Picasso, Kokoshka as well as Irish and Italian artists.

Lough Gartan

The holiday home is located close to the point where the River Lennon runs into the beautiful Lough Gartan. Gartan is the birthplace of Colmcille - one of the leading Irish Saints who founded the famous monastery on the Isle of Iona in Scotland. The Colmcille Heritage Centre on the shores of Lough Gartan celebrates his life and work. Also on the shores of the lough is the Gartan Outdoor Pursuits Centre. This is a very popular destination for adventure holiday enthusiasts.

Gartan Cottage is 3km north of the quaint Churchil village. The name derives from its location on top of a small hilltop. There are 3 traditional style Irish pubs in the village - a fast disappearing sight in modern Ireland. A further 15km to the south east is Letterkenny, Donegals main town. The Newmills Corn and Flax Mill is an award winning heritage site located between Churchill and Letterkenny.

Glenveagh National Park

The holiday home is just 3 km from the boundary of Glenveagh National Park. The main entrance and visitor centre is 10km away. Glenveagh is the jewel in the crown of Donegal tourism. This magnificent park contains 14,000 hectares of lakes, mountains, raised bogland and woodland. The golden eagle has been reintroduced into the park in recent years. Other birds that can be seen include grouse, ravens, redstarts, stonechats and wood warblers. The park has the largest herd of red deer in Ireland and also features foxes, badgers, hares and stoats. The 19th century Glenveagh Castle on the shores of Lough Veagh is open to the public throughout the tourist season.

What they say

Gartan cottage is in a lovely setting next to an entrance into Glenveagh castle. If you enjoy walking, it is a lovely area to access many good walks. The cottage itself was very well equipped and very comfortable and clean. We would definitely recommend it and go back. The owner was very helpful going out of his to meet us at 1.30 am to guide us to the cottage.
