Gleneely Cottage ::

Tariff 2008

The cottage is situated just 6km east of Culdaff in the village of Gleneely.
Between the two villages lies an area with a rich historical heritage linked to early Christian and earlier pre-Christian megalithic sites. One can find evidence and remains of old monasteries, churches and abbeys, stone crosses, stone circles, standing stones and megalithic tombs. Visit the sites of Cloncha, The Temple of Deen, and The Bocan Stone Circle. There were once monasteries at Carrowmore, Cloncha and Culdaff, suggesting that this small area of Inishowen was once a great centre of skill and learning.

The cottage itself, is a compact semi detached two storey with three upstairs bedrooms that can sleep up to five. Downstairs, is a large open plan living area which includes the lounge and kitchen. The kitchen is fully fitted and has all the necessary appliances. The lounge is comfortably furnished and has an open fireplace.

There is a separate utility room, bathroom, en-suite, and a downstairs shower room off the utility room. Outside there is enough parking space for four or five cars. The cottage is on a corner property in the heart of Gleneely, and is within walking distance of the local shop, garage and pubs.

Just across the road is the Orchard Bar and Bistro, possibly the most popular venue in Gleneely; - convenient if you don't feel like cooking.
A little further away in Culdaff, you will find McGrory's; a family run establishment that has been going since 1928. Here you will find a small hotel, a fine restaurant and two pubs; - The Front Bar, noted for its fine selection of food, drink and traditional Irish Music, and the Backroom Bar, which is really more of a function room, famous throughout Ireland and beyond for its range and quality of music and entertainment.

For a greater variety of pubs, restaurants and night life, the larger towns of Moville and Carndonagh will offer a little more, though a trip to Derry City will take about 45 minutes and there are cinemas, theatres, clubs, pubs, disco's and restaurants a-plenty. Do check for availability of taxis/buses, if drinking away.

The nearest beach is at Culdaff, and is only a short seven minute drive. It is a blue flag status beach with a lovely stretch of sand and surf, and is great for surfing, depending on wind and tide conditions. There is a safe play area for children next to the car park.

Two other nearby beaches that must be seen are: Kinnegoe Bay; facing north and surrounded by steep cliffs. In 1588 a Spanish Armada Vessel sank here. It was of Venetian origin, and one of the largest vessels in the fleet. The other beach is called The Five Finger Strand. It lies to the west, beyond Culdaff and Malin, and is surrounded by spectacular scenery.

Golfers will have a choice between courses at Greencastle, Redcastle, Ballyliffin, (which is famous for its two links on the isle of Doagh) Buncrana and Culmore in the city of Derry.

Near Ballyliffin, on the Isle of Doagh, is the Doagh Famine Village. It is an outdoor museum that tells the story of life in the area from the Famine back in the 1840s, through the 1900s to the present day.
Different to any other tourist attraction in Ireland the Famine Village depicts life in Ireland as it was, uncommercialised, interdenominational interspersed with humorous anecdotes of Irish life. - Well worth a visit.
