Panoramic Views over Lough Foyle

The holiday home is situated on an open elevated site that has breathtaking views of the sea and beaches stretching across to Benone beach, Magilligan Point and Binevenagh Mountain just outside Limavady in County Derry. The front of the house overlooks the renowned Greencastle Golf Course and nearby beaches and to the left of the house there are breathtaking views of where the Lough Foyle estuary joins the Atlantic Ocean. The beautiful beach at Downhill watched over by the famous Mussenden Temple can be seen from the house. This is one of the most photographed and painted landscapes in Ireland. Further on along is one of the most scenic stretches of railway line in Northern Ireland and the coastline of Castlerock and Portrush can be clearly seen.To the right of the house is a beautiful view of the Lough Foyle which leads the way towards Derry - the City of Culture.

It is an ideal base for family beach holidays for walkers, golfers, artists and anglers and also for those just wanting a quiet and beautiful place to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. It also serves well as a touring base for the Inishowen Peninsula and Northern Ireland where attractions such as the famous Giants Causeway, Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, Dunluce Castle and Bushmills’ Distillery can be seen.

Greencastle Village

In Greencastle village, the Inishowen Maritime Museum and Planetarium is popular with visitors and is located near the fishing harbour. The museum is proud of its exhibition of boats, extensive photographs and items of historical interest and the planetarium offers visitors the choice of a number of superb astronomical shows. Just past the Museum is the entrance to the ‘shore walk’ a path which follows the coastline and provides visitors and locals with a picturesque walk along the coastline from Greencastle to Moville Pier.

At the other end of the village are the remains of the Castle. This castle has been linked with the castle in the background of the Derry crest. It was built in 1305 to provide a base for Anglo-Norman power in the North West. There is a more modern Martello Fort beside the Norman ruin and this was built by the British to stop Napoléon invading circa 1800. In the centre of the village is the longstanding Kealy’s family owned seafood restaurant and bar. Evening dinner should normally be pre-booked but during the day the bar serves a range of delicious locally sourced light meals and snacks including fish and seafood. Close to Kealy’s is the Ferryport Bar which has live music at the weekends. It is a family friendly pub with a lovely beer garden where visitors can sit and enjoy at the fabulous view of the sea and surrounding coastline. Next to the Ferryport bar is Carey’s the local fish and chip shop. Carey’s has a wide ranging menu using fresh local produce and customers can ‘eat in’ or ‘take away’. Further along is the local ‘shop’ where you can purchase a wide range of items from daily newspapers to groceries and hardware.

Beaches

Close by are a number of golden sandy beaches. At Dunagree Point situated below the Stroove Lighthouse stretches the popular blue flag Stroove beach and in the summer months this beach is watched over by lifeguards who help ensure the safety of surfers and canoeists. Along from Stroove beach are a number of smaller secluded beaches and these can be accessed from the road. Walk further along and you will come to the well-known Nellie’s beach popular with holiday makers who like to jet ski and sail boats. In addition to Stroove Beach there are other excellent sandy beaches at Kinnegoe Bay, Culdaff and Five Finger Strand near Malin.

Golf

The nearby Greencastle Golf Club is a welcoming 18-hole golf course which spans the shoreline of Lough Foyle and is well known by golfers in the North West and beyond. Look up from the golf course and this holiday home can be seen nestled in the hills above overlooking the breathtaking coastline. Visitors to the golf club are welcome to play a round of golf and enjoy coffee, lunch or dinner in the clubhouse bar and restaurant where you can relax and try some of the delicious home-cooked food and ‘daily specials’ that range the well thought out menu. The views of the sea and beaches from the bar and restaurant are picturesque and typical of this beautiful unspoilt shoreline. If you are looking for other Golf Courses in the area you will find some of the best links courses in Ireland. You can use the holiday home as a base and take a drive to the Golf Club at Ballyliffin, the courses at Portstewart and Castlerock or challenge your golf at the world renowned course at Portrush Royal Golf Club.

Walking

Golfbeach View holiday home is an ideal base for walking. From the doorstep you can road walk around this delightful part of the peninsula or you can try the more challenging ‘Inishowen Head’ walk. This well-known rugged walk is full of history and starts off down the road from the house. It takes you past the historical Cross-inscribed stone at Crockalaghta past Crocknasmug and the most breathtaking views of the coastline and the sea can be enjoyed from the track. You will pass a cross supposedly carved by St Columba’s own finger and still a place of pilgrimage . An old look-out post allows walkers to take in the extensive views of the distant Scottish islands as well as Rathlin Island off the Antrim Coast and the seaside resorts of Portrush, Portstewart and Castlerock. The track descends and swings around and climbs on open moorland past original thatched cottages over Glennane Hill and back down to the road.

Watersports and Fishing

Close to Greencastle are some excellent water sports amenities. Nearby in Moville is ‘Just Kayak’ which offers coast, surf, white water and flat water kayaking for children, teenagers and adults. Just kayak is a family run business with friendly well qualified staff and whether you are a beginner or have some experience there is something for you as they offer kayak training for beginners and for the more experienced kayakers they offer tours and overnight trips by canoe and kayak. Sessions are very affordable offer value for money. They range from hourly sessions to day sessions to week long courses and the hire of suits and equipment are included in the price. Around the peninsula at Ballyliffin Beach the best surf will be found and surfing and bodyboarding lessons can be booked here. They cater for both individuals and groups. During the summer months pier fishing is extremely popular. There is a number of places to do this including the pier at Greencastle and Moville pier. What they say

Maggie. We had a wonderful time in Greencastle last week. The house and its setting was absolutely stunning, who would have believed we would have been sitting outside enjoying the view over the Foyle in glorious sunshine. We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend your house to our friends. I have no doubt we will be back!!

Craig

Thank you. I had the most wonderful time in your lovely scenic home. I can't pinpoint one thing. I think it's the whole package - scenery, beaches, walks, vibrant colourful scene and of course the friendliness and good natured people.
