Harbour Cottage in Buncrana is named
after the hotel adjacent to it - the 'Harbour-Inn'.
Situated in the Ludden area of Buncrana, the cottage is about 2km from the town centre
and has been recently renovated. Improvements include a modern fully fitted kitchen,
the interior painted in fresh, clean and neutral shades,
and simple uncluttered furnishings and fixtures. Oil fired central
heating provides warmth and comfort, but with a traditional open
fireplace as an alternative option.
The cottage is conveniently close to the hotel across the road, should one wish to
socialise at the bar, or enjoy a meal in the restaurant.
The local beach known as the "White Strand" is a 1 minute walk away, from
where one can enjoy a pleasant walk and spectacular views over Lough
Swilly (the Lake of Shadows in Phil Coulter's song)
There is also a
"Blue-Flag" beach a little further south at Lisfannon.
The golfing enthusiast will be pleased to know that the North West Golf
Club is less than 2 minutes drive away, between Lisfannon Beach and the
White strand.

Buncrana is the largest town on the Inishowen Peninsula, and the 2nd
largest in county Donegal and like most of Ireland, has seen rapid
growth, especially in housing over the last 12 years. Traditionally
Buncrana has always been a popular seaside resort, especially in the
summer months, when most of the available accommodation tends to be
booked out. In years gone by, the town was a centre for fishing,
particularly Herring. It also played an important part in the clothing trade,
and until recently the brand-names of 'Clubman Shirts' and 'Fruit of the
Loom' were associated with the town. The town has many pubs, a few fine
restaurants, supermarkets and many other retail outlets.
During the summer months, a ferry service operates across the Swilly
between Buncrana and Rathmullan, allowing convenient access to western
Donegal and all its scenic wonders.
A similar service operates on the eastern side of Inishowen at
Greencastle across the Foyle to Magilligan Point, into Northern Ireland.
This Foyle service runs throughout the year.
A beautiful and scenic walk can be enjoyed along the shore front. One could start at the pier and walk along the
beach or follow the shorefront path as far as the 'Stone-Jug', a small stone cottage
just before the Crana
Bridge. Across the bridge, you pass Vaughan 'Castle' and O'Doherty's Keep
- the remains of a 14th century castle.
One can then continue on along the
river bank through Swan Park, or take the left turn and follow the path
along the Swilly coast on to Ned's Point,
Porthaw Beach, Father Hegarty's
Rock and then finally Stragill Beach, before turning around for the
return trip.
The more determined
and fit may continue further to Linsfort, but after that, the beach
disappears into steep rocks and one may then have
to continue on the road in order to arrive at Desertegny and
finally the imposing rocky outcrop of Dunree Head.
