An established three bedroom cottage that sleeps six.
It has a lounge, three bedrooms, a single bathroom, an entrance hall &
passage and a kitchen with a small pantry/utility room. Comfort is
assured against the cold, with double glazed windows and oil fired
central heating. One can view the distant
Inishowen Hills across Pollan Bay from the west facing windows.
The cottage is centrally located in the heart of Malin Head, and is
within a five minute walking distance of all the local amenities, two
fine beaches, and the pier.
The nearby Seaview Tavern
and the Crossroads Inn are two local
establishments where one can enjoy a meal or a drink. Irelands most
northerly pub, which is called Farren's Bar, lies just east of the
cottage; - a most convenient situation for thirsty
hill walkers returning
from a long coastal trek, or weary tourists returning from an enjoyable
days sightseeing on the 'Inishowen 100'.
The most popular tourist destination at Malin Head, is the old Lloyds
tower, built in 1805. It stands on top of the hill known as "Banba's
Crown". When here, one has arrived at Ireland's most northerly point!
From here, there are incredible views of the surroundings. Looking
South, the spectacular majesty of the Inishowen Peninsula lies before
one. To the East and West, the rugged, rocky coastline, with its many
coves and cliffs and beaches. Looking out to sea, especially on a clear
day, you will see Tory Island in the West and the
Scottish Hebrides (Islay
& Jura) will be visible to the East.
Apart from sightseeing, whether by car, cycle or foot; - Outdoor
activities are many and varied.
Walking: the area is great for walking, and we mention 3
recommended walks here:
1. At Malin Head from Banba's Crown to Devils Hole. Allow about 90
minutes, enjoy distant views of Inisthrahull and the Hebrides on a clear
day. Afterwards, enjoy some "refreshments" at Farren's Bar.
2. A walk along Five Finger Strand, where one can enjoy the crashing
Atlantic surf, and view the largest sand dunes in Europe at Lagg.
3. For the more energetic, the Knockmany Bens walk, with panoramic views
overlooking Trawbreaga Bay, Doagh Island, Five Finger Strand, and the
beautifully situated church at Lagg.
Water sports include swimming, diving, sailing and surfing.
The enthusiastic bird watcher may be lucky to spot the elusive
'Corn-Crake', a bird said to be found in the Malin Head area.
There is also fishing and Deep Sea angling. (Arranging booking
and licensing may be necessary.)
Golf is very well catered for, with the nearest course being
about a half hour drive away, at Ballyliffin. This famous course has 2
links, and its popularity has led to the growth of holiday accommodation
in the area, and 5 hotels now serving Ballyliffin. Other golf courses
are to be found at Greencastle, Buncrana, Redcastle and Derry; - with
the furthest not more than 50 minutes drive.
Take a drive on the route known as the "Inishowen 100". This is a scenic
drive which takes you on a tour around the Inishowen Peninsula,
following a roughly 100 mile journey that provides
some of the most
spectacular scenery to be seen anywhere in Ireland. |
