Around Buncrana itself, there is much to see and do.
A walk over the old stone bridge across the Crana River (from which Buncrana is named), leads one directly to the entrance of the historic 18th century Vaughan House.

Turn right after the bridge, and the 14th century O' Doherty's-Keep, - the central remains of an old castle, looms before one. The path forks, and one can go straight, and choose a leisurely amble along the river bank through the wooded and shady Swan Park, or take the left turn for a longer, more energetic walk along a tarred coastal path leading on to Ned's Point, Porthaw Beach, Father Hegarty's Rock, and finally to the lovely stretch of Stragill Beach; all the while, enjoying spectacular views over Lough Swilly and the surrounding countryside.

At the very picturesque village of Fahan, A meal at the excellent St Johns Country House and Restaurant is not to be missed. For those who enjoy sailing, a recently constructed yacht-marina is gaining in popularity, as all the berths become filled. In a nearby graveyard, an ancient carved stone, dating to around the 5th century and known as St Mura's Cross can be viewed.

A little bit further south, the 'rath' or stone ring fort known as the 'Griannan of Aileach' is positioned on top of a hill with commanding views all around, taking in the Loughs Swilly and Foyle, the city of Derry to the east, the Inishowen Peninsula to the north and at least 4 counties to the south and west are visible. Some say this ring-fort dates back at least 3000 years. Another legend says the prophet Jeremiah visited the site.

A fifteen minute drive north along the coast will bring one to Dunree, where perched on a large rock, sits a strategically placed stronghold which was active from the early 19th century until the end of the 2nd world war, guarding the entrance to the lough against enemy vessels. A museum with displays and a guided tour of the site and its large naval guns; still in place, is worth a visit. From here, one can continue the drive over the Gap of Mamore and on to Clonmany and Ballyliffin with its famous Golf Course and the Isle of Doagh Visitor Centre; an outdoor museum with a unique 'Famine Village'.
