Nirvana Cottage is situated in West Donegal on a small peninsula surrounded by Trawenagh Bay to the north, and the Gweebaragh River Estuary and Bay to the south and west; and is roughly midway between Glenties and Dungloe. It is built on an elevation overlooking the lovely and picturesque Trawenagh Bay.
The holiday home is large and spacious, having five bedrooms able to sleep up to twelve adults. The home has all the conveniences and facilities one would expect from a modern home: A fully fitted kitchen and dining area; double glazing throughout, with oil-fired central heating, as well as a wood burning stove in the fireplace, for added thermal efficiency. The ablution facilities include a unique Sauna in the main bathroom, and a Jacuzzi spa-bath in one of the en-suites. A TV & DVD with free-view satellite reception in the lounge and an additional TV in the kitchen.
The waters edge is a short walk away; more or less 400m. Only a little further, about 1 km, is the fabulous Dooey Beach: A broad 3km long strip of sand facing due west onto the Atlantic with waves that surfers will travel far and wide to ride. - So, if the weather and conditions are right, this would be perfect accommodation for a group of enthusiaGweebara Baystic surfers.
From the comfort of the lounge, one can actually observe the swells as they enter Trawenagh Bay, and the experienced eye will judge whether conditions may be suitable for surfing over at Dooey Beach.
A Summer Surf School is available locally for those who want to learn surfing skills.
While the appeal for surfers is in no doubt, the cottage also serves as an ideal touring base for this unique area of west Donegal, and its many other scenic attractions and outdoor activities.
Perhaps, one the most increasingly popular activities is hill-walking or rambling. A healthy and rewarding activity, which has minimal risk, requires little more than good walking shoes & protective clothing, and costs nothing to participate. With all the lakes and coves and beaches and the rugged hills of Donegal, the walker is spoilt for choice. For some, a real challenge would be the ascent of Mount Errigal; Donegal's highest peak.
Other activities are: Angling and deep sea fishing. (There is Salmon in the Gweebarra River.) For deep sea fishing, one may need to check on the availability and hiring/booking of a boat etc.
For the golfer, the Portnoo/Nairn golf club is only 8 miles away, with many more courses around Donegal to choose from.
There is horse riding in Ardara, which is 10 miles away.
On the drive toGlenveigh castle - Nirvana Cottage, Lettermacaward, Donegal, Ireland Mt. Errigal, past Dunlewy and the "Poisoned Glen", the road takes one to Glenveigh National Park: Formerly a wealthy landowners private estate, it is now administered by the Irish Tourist Board and is well worth a visit. The park includes a lake surrounded by hills and the "castle"; - a glorified hunting lodge, which was also used as the residence. The former owner and his entourage used to enjoy the 'sport' of deer hunting. Deer are still found on the estate, but are now a protected species. Guided tours show the visitor around the estate. Beautiful, well maintained gardens, the surrounding scenery, and the catering facilities all add to the attraction.
The fully fitted kitchen is well illuminated, with windows facing south and west, providing good light and magnificent views over Trawenagh Bay.
Facilities include a gas hob, electric oven, dishwasher, microwave, fridge/freezer, kettle, toaster, and essential crockery, cutlery and cookware.
A washing machine and tumble dryer, iron and ironing board are located in a separate utility area off the kitchen. There is also a separate toilet, hand-basin and shower room next door.
An ornate dining table with 6 chairs for sit down meals is provided. The table has a split mid-section allowing for expansion should more seating be required.
A large and spacious comfortably furnished lounge with access to the kitchen and dining area via double doors. The traditional open fireplace is fitted with a solid fuel/wood burning stove for better thermal efficiency; while the TV & DVD provide entertainment. Windows facing north and west, bathe the room in light, and allow one to gaze on spectacular coastal scenery.
Oil fired central heating is included, and all windows are double glazed for insulation.
