O'Ceallaigh's House ::

Tariff 2009

This traditional nineteenth century farmhouse has been in the O’Ceallaigh family for nearly forty years. It has been restored to optimize the changing Donegal climate with its windows capturing the least ray of sunshine. The house is used regularly by the family who are anxious that visitors should feel absolutely at home. The shelves are filled with books in several languages — French, Italian, Irish, English and rainy days can be spent reading by the fireside.

The country lane leading to house runs through 25 acres which have been planted with a mixture of spruce and broad leaf trees. The house looks over Donegal Bay and the sea can be seen from all the front upstairs and downstairs rooms. It is ideally located for walks and rambles, either along the shore to Mountcharles harbour or across country lanes to the Eagle’s Nest. For those who like sea and river fishing, the Eany River is two kilometres down the road and St John’s Point is twenty minutes away by car.

The house (built in 1850) is a 2 storey cottage (two up, two down) built in traditional Mountcharles stone (not visible) that has had various extensions made to it since it was acquired by the family in 1969.

The large bedroom with a double bed and an independent shower room (ensuite) at the back of the house is one of these additions. Another is the spacious bathroom at the top of the stairs at the end of the corridor leading to the two first floor bedrooms. One of these contains a double bed and a Victorian fireplace, which draws extremely well; the other has two single beds and a Z bed and a large built-in cupboard. All these beds are new as are the mattresses of the double beds.

The latest addition is a summer sitting-room cum study with a conservatory window facing south west to catch the afternoon and evening sun.

The large kitchen is fully equipped, with a new cast iron electric cooker, a dishwasher, a fitted fridge and the floor is flag stoned in local Mountcharles stone. The freestanding cast iron stove will burn turf, wood and some types of coal. The utility room houses a second fridge and a new washer/dryer.

The fire in the Victorian style sitting room also draws well. Apart from the open fires, the heating is supplied by three storage heaters and four modern, efficient electric radiators.

The location of the house, in the townland of Munterneese, about 4 kilometres from Mountcharles village and 10 kilometres from Donegal Town is an ideal spot for a variety of leisure activities: walking, horseback riding (at Dunkineely), golf at Murvagh and Portnoo, river fishing (the Eany River is half a mile down the road) and sea fishing from the shore or from a hired boat at Killybegs. Among the more spectacular beauty spots near at hand and not to be missed are St. John's Point, Slieve League, the Loughros Peninsula and Lough Eske.
