The house is within walking distance of the beautiful village of
Churchill with its shop, 3 pubs, Post Office and takeaway. The
location of Churchill allows the visitor to a have a break in an area of
outstanding natural beauty. It is an idea base for exploring the
whole of Donegal County and all that it has to offer.
The magnificent beaches at Carrigart, Downings, Portnablagh,
Dunfanaghy, Portsalon and Rathmullan are all within 40 mins drive time. Boats can be chartered at most of these villages and the area has some of the finest golf links in the country.
Letterkenny, Donegal's largest town, with its shops, cinema, theatre,
indoor children's adventure playground and public swimming pool, is just a
12 min drive away.
Gartan Outdoor
Centre & Colmcille Heritage Centre 1.5 miles.
Gartan outdoor centre is a restored stone building located on the
southern side of the beautiful lough Gartan. It originally housed the
stables and farm buildings of the old Lough Veagh House. The Centre is
set on its own 87-acre estate and several activities take place on the
lake - the public are welcome to come along for a walk along the wooded
shores of beautiful Lough Gartan.
The Glebe House and Gallery – 2.0 miles
Located in Churchill on the shores of Lough Gartan, the house was
originally a Church of Ireland Rectory and became the long time home of
the late artist Derek Hill in the 1950’s. In 1980 Hill presented the
house, grounds and his art collection to the state. The St. Columb’s
House and Glebe Gallery are open for tours and are operated by the OPW.
There is also a tearoom.
Glenveagh Park. 5 miles
Glenveagh Park is the no.1 tourist attraction in Donegal and is operated
by the OPW. The Park is situated on the eastern side of the Derryveagh
Mountains. The Park consists of 14,000 hectares of mountain, raised
boglands, lakes and woodlands. The Park has a visitor’s centre,
Glenveagh castle with its Neo-Gothic architecture and beautiful walled
gardens. The Park has the largest herd of red deer in Ireland if not
Europe and you might even spot one of the recently introduced eagles! |
