Port Caman Cottage ::

Tariff 2008

The cottage gets its name from a small settlement of cottages and houses close to a pebble beach, facing White Strand Bay, about 5km south of Ireland's most northerly point at Malin Head. The area is also known as Culoort, from the nearby river, and there is some spectacular coastal scenery looking south west.

The cottage is situated about 1km east of Port Caman, on the lower northern slopes of White Hill, in a quiet and peaceful location.

It is a modern newly built dwelling, with five bedrooms to sleep up to ten. There are two main bathrooms, an en-suite and a utility room toilet. The kitchen is fully fitted, with all the modern appliances one would expect to find; and there is a utility room and dining area, as well as a spacious hallway and landing area. The lounge has a traditional open fireplace, and TV with DVD. The house is also fully insulated, double glazed, and has oil fired central heating for the colder months.

It would be quite suitable for a large family or a group, and makes an ideal touring base for exploring the unique charms of the area.

The nearest beach is just a little over 1km to the west, and is a pebble beach, facing White Strand Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. It would not be suitable as a bathing area, but it provides spectacular coastal views, and is perfect for walkers wishing to explore the area. Driving through the Port Caman settlement, one is presented with the view shown below...

The nearest sandy beach is possibly the 'Five Finger Strand', which one can get to in about fifteen minutes, by taking the road around the west and south side of White Hill. This section of road presents one with some of the most spectacular coastal scenery to be seen any where in Ireland, with views across the mouth of Trawbreaga Bay, over the Isle of Doagh toward the Inishowen Hills, and Glashedy Island. The road forms part of the route of a drive called the 'Inishowen 100'; a drive which follows a 100 mile, circumnavigation of the Inishowen Peninsula, and is well worth taking on a fine day. (Remember to take a camera.)

From the cottage, the village of Malin is about 9km, and Malin Head is about 7km. At Malin Head, there is the Sea View Tavern, The Crossroads Inn, or Farren's Bar, where one may go for eats and drinks. At Malin, there is a diner, and two pubs called Lilly's and McCleans, as well as the Malin Hotel, which has its own restaurant and two bars.

A twenty minute drive east to Culdaff, will reward you with fine food and drink at a popular establishment known as McGrory's. It has a 17 room 3 star hotel, a fine restaurant, a front bar, famous for its traditional Irish music, and the 'Backroom Bar'; an internationally renowned live music venue with regular concerts and quality live events.
Culdaff also has a fine sandy beach with 'Blue Flag' status, and a safe play area for children.

Golfers will be pleased to know that Inishowen has a number of courses, all under an hours drive; with the nearest being the famous Ballyliffin Club with its two links courses. Other courses are to be found at Greencastle, Redcastle, Buncrana and Culmore in the city of Derry.
