Are you in need of an escape from the hassle of everyday life? Want to
get away from it all and enjoy a well earned break in tranquil
surroundings? Then Colbha Cottage provides an ideal haven
allowing the holidaymaker to relax and take it easy. The cottage is situated at Knockalla, near Portsalon in County
Donegal, Ireland. It is the perfect base for anyone wishing to explore
the famous Fanad Peninsula. Only 500 yds from a superb blue-flag
beach and a mile from Portsalon which has an excellent golf course
and quaint harbour with a small restaurant and spirit-grocers.
Colbha Cottage takes its name from the nearby mountain and is situated
at the foot of the Knockalla Mountains in a small private development
offering the holidaymaker comfort and tranquillity. From the
conservatory at the rear you can gaze eastwards across Ballymastocker
Bay towards the Inishowen Peninsula or northwards towards Portsalon
Harbour and the hills that lie behind. To the south the Knockalla
Mountains tower imposingly above providing a constantly changing
tapestry of colour in the ever-changing light.
Only 500 yards from the cottage is a magnificent blue-flag beach shown
in the picture. It is safe for bathing and even in the height of summer
is never crowded. Just a mile away, immediately adjacent to Portsalon
Harbour, is the golf club which welcomes visitors and offers a
challenging 18-hole links course. At the harbour you will find a small
restaurant providing a range of dishes that are competitively priced and
should satisfy even the hungriest of holidaymakers.
The Harbour also has a quaint spirit-grocers (a legacy of rural
Ireland left over from many years ago) where customers can still buy
sweets and basic provisions at one end of the counter and quench their
thirst at the other end!
If you don’t mind travelling there are several hotels and restaurants in
the surrounding towns of Rathmullan (from where the "Flight of
the Earls" took place in 1607), Kerrykeel, Milford and Ramelton. Sea
fishing is possible from the rocks all around the peninsula and at
Rathmullan Harbour. During the summer months it is sometimes possible to
charter a small boat for fishing in Lough Swilly. Why not explore the
area and enjoy the superb views that lie around almost every corner as
you drive along the normally quite country roads.
