The nearest villages to Rock Cottage are Carrick and Kilcar. There is a nice selection of pubs in Kilcar where there is entertainment such as traditional Irish music all summer long. John Joes Bar is popular as it has been a winner of the Traditional Irish Music Pub of the Year Award. Other lively pubs are The Pipers Rest, Kilcar House and O'Gara's. The village also has a community centre called Aisleann Cill Cartha. This organisation provides genealogical information, compendiums of residents oral histories and local history collections. The centre also has a gymnasium, a library, internet access, and a cinema for children. Carrick is the largest village in the Parish of Glencolmcille. A single street, its growth owes much to an early nineteenth century landlord's desire to keep a 'highland' summer house in the area. The village itself displays a relaxed atmosphere combined with a friendly community. Local amenities and attractions include: Slieve League cliffs are the highest sea cliffs in Europe at 900ft (300m) and drop straight down to the Atlantic Ocean. If you have a good head for heights, there is a beautiful walk from Bunglass to Malinbeg near Glencolmcille. It provides a unique habitat which has been identified by wildlife conservation groups as an area of international scientific interest for bird and plant life. Killybegs (10 miles) is one of Ireland's greatest fishing ports but it also has much to offer as a tourist centre. It is built around a fine natural harbour and is gaining a reputation as a water sports centre. There is excellent sea and river fishing in the area and for the more adventurous, sub aqua diving. The Killybegs International Sea Angling Festival is held in August. Teelin Bay - "Yellow River" noted for salmon fishing and diving and boat trips are available during summer season. Beaches - The local beach is located approx 1 mile from the cottage. Other beaches in the area include the blue flag beach at Fintra, Silver Strand beach, Malinbeg beach and Glencolmcille. Walking - Rock cottage is surrounded by a network of quiet country roads and scenic walking routes, suitable for walkers of all abilities. |
