Built in 1916, this beautifully restored traditional stone cottage is located on the North West coast of Ireland. Situated atop a height in the tranquil area known as Derries, this gorgeous cottage is surrounded by nature. Lots of easily accessible outdoor activities and beautiful scenic walks are just outside your door. Amidst all this natural beauty, Rose Cottage is still close to two lively country villages; the historic town of Ardara (5km) and the bustling town of Glenties (1k).
The area around Glenties and Ardara has been described as a fisherman's paradise. The Owenea River runs through Glenties town and is famous for its salmon and trout fishing. The hills that surround the holiday home are dotted with numerous lakes that are filled with trout.
Indeed these hills are also ideal walking terrain. There are a number of excellent signed walks in this part of West Donegal. The Gap Trail is 2 km outside Glenties. This trail follows the route of a former bogcutter's railway and is a nice short excursion. The Bluestack Way is a more challenging route, coming over the Bluestack Mountains from Donegal Town and Lough Eske before coming through Glenties and following the River Owenea to Ardara. Slí na Finne is a nearby loop route around Fintown Lake and Ballinamore, passing into the Bluestack Mountains and The Croaghs.
Ardara is situated close to the small River Owentocher. This heritage town is a major centre for the manufacture of hand-woven tweed with several shops along the main street selling tweeds and hand-knitted sweaters. While in the town pay a visit to The Ardara Heritage Centre - which houses an exhibition relating the history of Donegal Tweed. The pubs of Ardara are welcoming and friendly - the visitor can experience a rich mix of traditional music.
The holiday home is also a central base to attend the various annual festivals and other organised events that take place in this part of Donegal. In Glenties there festivals almost every month and there is the Patrick McGill Summer School, the Harvest Fair Festival and the Fiddlers Weekend.
