The Barn is a beautiful stone clad cottage created out of the restoration of 3 stone buildings that were built as a terrace arrangement over 200 years ago. The cottage is located in the townland of Murroe 4km outside Dunfanaghy on the road to Falcarragh. With Muckish Mountain as a backdrop the cottage enjoys views towards the sea at Tramore beach and also of the western shores of New Lake - a man made lake that is now a haven for sea birds.
Local stone, slate and timber was used in the original construction of the buildings. Much of the original stone work has been retained in the outer walls. The interior has been extensively restored over the past few years in a manner that tastefully combines modern comforts with old world charm. A major feature of the holiday home is the open living area which is bright, spacious and beautifully furnished and decorated. There is also 4 bright and comfortable bedrooms - including a large ensuite dormitory style bedroom with 4 single beds.
The owner of The Barn lives in Dunfanaghy and is a regular hillwalker in the area. He can organise guided walks for various levels of fitness and interests.
The Barn is centrally located along the North Donegal coastline. Mountain climbing and hill walking are popular in this spectacular landscape with Muckish, Errigal and the Derryveagh mountains all easily reachable. The holiday home is an ideal base for those who want to undertake the famous Glover Highlander Walk - a walk that includes Muckish and Errigal and all peaks in between. There are also a number of beautiful coastal and forest walks in the region - including numerous walking trails in the wonderful Ards Forest Park. Even closer to the holiday home is the dramatic Horn Head Peninsula which features a stunning scenic drive and numerous scenic walks. The entire peninsula has been designated as an Irish Natural Heritage Area and a Refuge for Fauna (specifically sea birds)
The area around the holiday home is renowned for its golden sandy beaches. The holiday home overlooks the huge sand dunes that surround the fabulous Tramore Strand. Tramore is one of the last truly unspoilt beaches in the country. Some local knowledge is required to access this beautiful beach but the effort will be richly rewarded. In addition to Tramore there are five other superb beaches in this beautiful part of Donegal – Killahoey in Dunfanaghy, Portnablagh, Marble Hill, Falcarragh and Ards
The spacious open plan kitchen, dining and living area has a beamed ceiling, wood floors, a wood burning stove and large windows providing ample natural light. The newly fitted kitchen has an attractive range of contemporary units with stylish worktops, and provides all the high quality appliances you would expect – dishwasher, microwave, fridge/freezer and a range style cooker with a gas hob. A separate utility room houses a washer/dryer. The dining area has a large well-made table and 8 chairs.
The living area in the open plan ground floor enjoys lovely views over the large sand dunes that surround the fabulous Tramore Beach. New Lake can also be viewed from this bright living space. A wood burning stove set against some beautiful stone work provides a warm ambience to the area - although the cottage does also have full oil-fired central heating using Victorian style radiators.
The holiday home has 4 bright and comfortable bedrooms - each with their own individual style. On the ground floor there are three bedrooms - two doubles and a single bedroom. One of the double bedrooms has a television. All the bedrooms are carpeted and are adjacent to the main bathroom on the ground floor.

I travel a lot so I'm always looking for interesting places to stay - anything to avoid another carbon copy hotel - and this has got to be one of the best local travel sites I've seen. Plenty of detail, tons of photos, excellent location info and clear pricing - everything I need to make an informed call. Great job and I'll be recommending the site to anyone else I know who's travelling in Donegal.
