The Old Farm House - Killybegs

Built in the late 19th century, The Old farmhouse is a picture perfect Donegal Farmhouse which has been sympathetically renovated. Great care has been taken to retain the old farmhouse’s original charm i.e. low ceilings and exposed beams whilst providing all the facilities for home from home comforts.

Interior

The large spacious kitchen has an abundance of kitchen units and is fitted with all the modern conveniences one would need. There is also a large table which can seat up to 6 people comfortably.

The house is heated by oil fired central heating but in the lounge there is an open fire for those who wish to relax in front of a real fire. There are two large comfortable settees. A Selection of DVDs is provided for the coloured TV and DVD player. Freeview is also available.There is also a selection of books and board games.

The bathroom has a WC, wash hand basin and a bath with a mixer shower and a pump shower. For added comfort there is underfloor heating in this room.

A central staircase takes one upstairs to three cosy bedrooms. Near the top of the stairs, a rear window opens to a rear facing decked balcony affording panoramic countryside views.

Bedrooms

The Master Bedroom has double aspect windows with window seats and features a cast iron fireplace.  There is also a small ensuite (toilet & washbowl).
The Twin Bedroom has views to the front of the house .
The Third Bedroom is suitable for children and consists of excellent solid dark pine bunk beds. There is also a portable TV-DVD combi in this room.

Outside

Outside the property is surrounded with mature trees and the front has a gravel drive surrounded by lawn. The meandering ‘Oily River flows nearby.

Set in a peaceful location, off a quiet country road, the house is situated in central west Donegal some four miles north of Killybegs, and six miles south of Ardara, which makes the cottage an ideal touring base. There are many scenic attractions worth visiting from here, with most within less than a half hours drive.

What to see

The nearest sandy beaches are the lovely blue flag status beach at Fintragh to the south, or the impressive Maghera Strand at Loughros Beg Bay to the north. Before arriving at this beach look out for the spectacular Assaranca waterfall, and at low tide, you should be able to visit the Maghera Caves further west along this beach. Other coastal attractions not to be missed are the St Johns Point peninsula, the awesome cliffs at Slieve League said to be the highest in Europe, and the lovely horseshoe bay at Malin Beg near Glencolumbkille.

Where to eat out

The nearest pub and restaurant is Mary Murrins, a 3 minute drive down the road at Bruckless, or a little further on, the Michelin starred Castle Murray Restaurant at St Johns Point. For more variety, visit Killybegs, where you will have a a greater choice of pubs, restaurants and hotels for wining and dining. The Clock Tower and  Kitty Kellys come to mind here.

What to do

Hill walking, Angling, Golf (at Portnoo or Murvagh near Donegal Town), a variety of water sports, including surfing, sailing, and sub-aqua diving and sight seeing or touring whether by car, cycle or on foot. There is a local Equestrian Centre at Bruckless called Deanes, should you prefer to do some sightseeing on horseback.

Living Space

  Kitchen

The kitchen is just to the left after the entrance. Fitted on two sides with base storage units, a matching dresser and furnished with an expandable dining table with six chairs. Appliances include a gas range with an electric oven, a dishwasher, a porcelain Belfast sink, fridge, freezer, washing machine, iron and ironing board, microwave, kettle, toaster, George Foreman grill, and essential crockery, cutlery and cookware.
Its warm friendly atmosphere makes it the heart of the home.

  Living room

The lounge is a spacious room occupying the right side of the ground floor. It is comfortably furnished and tastefully decorated. The traditional open fireplace is surrounded by seating that includes two 2-seat couches and a separate arm chair. There is a TV with a DVD, and free-view satellite reception.

  Bedrooms

There are three upstairs bedrooms to sleep up to six.
The master bedroom, occupies the upper right (south) side of the dwelling, and it has a double bed. There is also a small ensuite (toilet & washbasin)
The second bedroom has two single beds, and the third, rear facing bedroom has a bunk bed (two singles.)

  Bathroom

The bathroom is situated at the rear of the house in what used to be the old kitchen.
It is fitted with modern sanitary-ware and plumbing, and includes a bath, basin, toilet and an over-bath shower and underfloor heating.

Non-refundable booking deposit of euro100 per week - with balance to be paid six weeks prior to the letting period.
