Culdaff, one of the most northerly towns in
Ireland, lies on the Inishowen Peninsula, not far from Irelands most
northerly point at Malin Head, and close to the towns of Carndonagh,
Greencastle, Ballyliffin and Malin.
An ideal touring base, Culdaff is
not far from
Greencastle in the east, with its ferry connection across
Lough Foyle to Magilligan Point; - a gateway to Northern Ireland.
Along Inishowen's west coast, another ferry connects
Buncrana across Lough
Swilly to Rathmullan and the rest of Western Donegal.
McGrorys and Macs Backroom Bar, is undoubtedly the main attraction in Culdaff: a
popular venue for local and international musicians, it is more than
just a pub, a restaurant and a hotel. Friendly service, great food and good
music; your stay in Culdaff is incomplete without a visit to McGrory's!
There is much to see and do, with many of the attractions in Inishowen
and the surrounding areas within an hours driving time.
Some of these attractions are: The "Isle of Doagh Famine Village" near
Ballyliffin; - a popular outdoor museum, focusing on Ireland in the
1840's during the great famine, and telling the story of the conditions
and circumstances that brought about this disastrous event by using
outdoor displays. There are also music and dance events, performed by
local artists in July & August. In December the venue becomes
"Santa's
Village", is extremely popular, so early booking is essential.
Ballyliffin itself, is a town which, although set in a scenically
beautiful area, has the Ballyliffin Golf Club
with its two links as the
main attraction. Golf enthusiasts may also wish to play other courses at
nearby Greencastle, Buncrana, Redcastle and in Derry.
Other attractions include:
The "Guns of Dunree",
The old ring fort known as "Griannan of Aileach",
Glenevin waterfall near Clonmany,
Leisureland in Redcastle,
The Inishowen Maritime Museum and Planetarium at Greencastle,
The Giants Causeway and the Bushmills Distillery; (by ferry across to
Magilligan Point, and then on via Coleraine)
Glenveagh Castle and National Park (by ferry across to Rathmullan or via
Letterkenny)
The list is by no means complete as space is limited.
Sometimes the best things are left to be discovered.
We are sure though, that whatever your reasons for visiting this unique
part of Ireland, you will leave having enjoyed your stay and with
thoughts of returning again, and again.. |
