The cottage is situated just 3km outside the
town of Buncrana near the eastern shore of Lough Swilly. There are four
bedrooms to sleep up to eight, a lounge, dining room, kitchen, utility
room, main bathroom, an en-suite and a separate toilet off the utility
room. There is also a basement 'games' room. Outbuildings include a
garage, garden shed, and a small green house.
The home is well
established and comfortably furnished throughout, has oil fired central
heating, double glazing, a gas-fired fireplace in the lounge, and an
open fireplace in the dining room. The garden is landscaped, and mature with tall perimeter hedges to
provide seclusion and privacy.
Buncrana is the largest town in Inishowen and the second largest in
Donegal (After Letterkenny). It has a good infrastructure, and includes
3 hotels 17 pubs, 4 supermarkets, 4 schools, a children's play area, a
cinema, 3 banks, and many other shops and service providers.
There are a number of sports and recreation facilities including:
The North West Golf Club at Lisfannon.
An indoor swimming pool with gym & sauna
There is a yacht marina at Fahan.
In the summer months, a ferry service operates from the pier, and
crosses the Swilly to Rathmullan, and conveniently allows one to extend
ones tour into west Donegal.
Locally, there are lovely walks along the shoreline; with the White
Strand beach, and a
Blue Flag Beach at Lisfannon to the south, while along the northern
shore, a paved pathway will get you
from Castle bridge, past Vaughan House and O'Doherty's Keep, onto Ned's
Point, Porthaw Beach and finally Stragill Beach. Admire beautiful
coastal scenery along the way, and there are benches laid out at
intervals along the path, where you can catch your breath and enjoy the
views, or maybe watch the sunset. After St ragill
the path ends; and at this point you may want to turn around.(- or if
you are really fit you can continue on to Linsfort and Dunree.)
For more on Dunree, see the separate page by clicking on the 4th
thumbnail, below.
A shorter walk takes one through the lovely Swan Park, which follows the Crana River along a wooded path, from Castle Bridge to the road bridge.
A little further along the river, is the Tullyarvan Mill; a renovated
19th century grain mill, which now hosts art exhibitions, music
festivals, concerts, plays, and provides a venue for private functions
and conferences. It also has a 52 bed hostel.
2007 marks the 400th anniversary of the "Flight of the Earls"
an important event in Irish history, which took place across Lough
Swilly at Rathmullan in 1607. There will be Festivals,
Seminars, Exhibitions, Theatre, Clan Gatherings, Re-enactments, School
projects, etc, commemorating this event throughout Ireland. |
