The Weavers Cottage - Fort Dunree

Fort Dunree Military Museum was first opened to the public in 1986, and has attracted tourists from all over the world ever since. The Museum comprises an exhibition centre with audio-visual facilities, a cafeteria, and coach & car parks.
Some of the old naval guns used to  defend the bay, remain, and are now on display near the car park.

The area has majestic views of Lough Swilly, unique flora and fauna, birdlife; - and one can enjoy scenic walks.

The history of the fort was always linked to the strategic importance of Lough Swilly. It is set on a rock separated from the mainland by a narrow fissure, with only a narrow bridge to gain entrance. It commands clear views of the surroundings, and more importantly, the opening where Lough Swilly meets the North Atlantic.
Originally built to guard against the return of a French Invasion Fleet during the Napoleonic Wars, the fort was enlarged and modernised in the 19th century, and in the First World War, it stood guard while Admiral Lord Jellicoe's 'Grand Fleet' took shelter in Lough Swilly, prior to engaging in the battle of Jutland.
It was finally "decommissioned" after the Second World War.

A popular and beautiful beach, sheltered in a natural horseshoe bay lies just north east of the fort; called Crummies Bay.
