Whitehill House is a large four bedroom dwelling that sleeps eight. It has a large fully fitted kitchen and dining area with its own fireplace, a main lounge with a fireplace, and a smaller intimate lounge. It has two bathrooms, with the second one upstairs. The TV has a DVD as well as SKY reception, and all the front facing rooms have magnificent lake views. The house is insulated and double glazed with oil fired central heating for added comfort in the colder months.

Outside, the property is landscaped, and has a large cement paved area around the house that would be suitable for parking or as a patio area. There is a well-spring at the rear of the house with a constant flow of running water from its outlet pipe. Located on a 7 acre site, the holidaymaker is welcome to walk the land and take in the lovely views to be had.

The property is sited on an elevation that forms the lower slopes of the hill after which it is named, - Whitehill. It has a magnificent view of the surrounding countryside and hills with the main feature being the lake known as Lough Akibbon, lying just below.

The area lies roughly in the centre of county Donegal, on the eastern side of the Glenveigh National Park, with the Derryveagh Mountains just visible in the west behind the hill. The nearest village is Church Hill, which is about 3km away. There are four interconnected lakes in the immediate vicinity, they are Lough Akibbon, Lough Nacally, Lough Claggan, and the largest one  which is Gartan Lough. There is also a much smaller one called Lough Beg, - more of a pond really.

Apart from its natural scenic beauty, Gartan Lough, has on its shores.
The Gartan Outdoor Education Centre.
A popular destination for adventure holiday enthusiasts. If you want to maximise your enjoyment of the rugged outdoors, canoeing, kayaking, mountain climbing, abseiling, hiking, whether in lake, sea, rivers, islands, hills, mountain crags, sea cliffs or forests, this is the place.

The Colmcille Heritage Centre

This centre houses a unique interpretative exhibition featuring the life and times of Saint Colmcille Columba - Patriarch of the Irish monastic system and founder of the Scottish Church. St Comlcilles birthplace is situated about 2km from the House, and the site is marked by a large stone cross. There are also two sacred stones around which various superstitions have spread. Pregnant women pray at the Natal Stone to ensure a safe delivery, while the Stone of Loneliness warded off the anguish of homesickness and was popular for those about to emigrate.

Glebe Gallery

On the opposite bank of Gartan, lies the Glebe Gallery. A Regency house set in woodland gardens beside the lake. The house was originally a Church of Ireland Rectory and became the long time home of the late artist Derek Hill in the 1950’s. The Glebe is decorated with William Morris wallpapers and textiles and has Islamic and Japanese art. The Derek Hill permanent collection includes 300 works by leading 20th century artists, including Picasso and Kokosha, as well as Irish and Italian artists. There is also a tearoom.

The village of Church Hill is an ideal base for a hill walking or sightseeing holiday in Donegal. As its name suggests, the village is located on a small hilltop and has lovely views over the Donegal landscape. It has three pubs. Wilkins Bar, McClaffertys, and Callaghans, where you can go for a drink and a meal, enjoy music and entertainment, traditional and modern, on both midweek and week-end nights.

What they say

I travel a lot so I'm always looking for interesting places to stay - anything to avoid another carbon copy hotel - and this has got to be one of the best local travel sites I've seen. Plenty of detail, tons of photos, excellent location info and clear pricing - everything I need to make an informed call. Great job and I'll be recommending the site to anyone else I know who's travelling in Donegal.
