1840 Station Cottage Ballinamore - newly renovated 3 bedroom cottage set in idyllic Donegal countryside. Tourist attractions close by include: Glenveagh Castle, the Slieve League Cliffs and the Bluestack Mountains. The original Fintown Railway (no a major tourist attraction) is close by. This cottage is located close to the River Finn which has some of the best salmon fishing waters in Europe.
The cottage is surrounded by hills and tumbling streams making it ideal for a relaxing holiday in tranquil surroundings. There are truly amazing views and walks direct from the cottage door. Or just drop along to the river Finn for a spot of brown trout fishing. This cottage affords a restful getaway for the keen walker, photographer, artist or angler.
Station Cottage is situated in Donegal's Gaeltacht Lar (central Gaeltacht) which is located between Gweebara Bay, Gleann Fhinne, and Glendowen. The Irish Language is spoken here and traditions of Irish song, dance and folklore prevail. Music sessions can be found in the pubs of nearby Fintown village – The Railway Inn and Teach Ceol.
For railway enthusiasts, Fintown has a little gem to offer. The Fintown Railway is a restored section of the former County Donegal Railway and is the only working railway in County Donegal. This narrow-gauge railway runs for 5km along the shores of beautiful Lough Finn. This setting prompted the renowned international playwright Brian Friel to announce “What is on offer is a unique journey along the shores of a lake as grand as any in Switzerland or Minnesota”
The River Finn which meanders through this part of Donegal is recognised as one of the finest salmon rivers in Ireland and attracts anglers from far and wide. Lough Namurleog and Lough Nabrack - are good for brown trout. Permits for fishing in the Fintown area can be obtained from the Railway Inn or from the Train Station. There is also excellent fishing on the nearby Gwebarra River and on the many lakes in and around Dungloe.
The area around Lough Station Cottage is wonderful rambling and hill walking terrain. There are several signposted routes in the locality. Passing through Fintown is Sli Na Finne which is a section of the Bealach na Gaeltachta Waymarked Way. This route provides the most beautiful scenery and exhilarating walking imaginable.
Just beyond the nearby village of Doochary is access to Sli na Rossan – a walking route around the rugged Rosses area of West Donegal. To the south of the cottage lie the Bluestack Mountains which are renowned for their hill walking routes. Located 25km to the north of the holiday cottage is the magnificent Glenveagh National Park. With mountains, glens, and lakes this park is a walkers paradise.
The Station House is also within easy driving distance of 3 of Donegal’s most popular tourist towns – Ardara, Glenties, and Dungloe. All have major festivals and organised events including The Mary from Dungloe International Festival, the Patrick McGill Summer School in Glenties and The Cup o’Tae festival in Ardara. Indeed Ardara is known as the” Festival Capital of Donegal” and has a full programme of events throughout the year.
The Station House provides a unique holiday experience in a quiet rural setting. Whether you want to enjoy the great outdoors or simply want to unwind and relax this charming cottage provides the ideal holiday base.
The kitchen of Station Cottage is fully equipped to ensure a great holiday experience.
