No. 6 Glashedy View is a lovely, compact yet surprisingly spacious self catering holiday cottage located in a complex sharing the same name just off the shore road between Ballyliffin and the beach. East facing, the cottage enjoys spectacular views over the golf course, Doagh Island and Pollan Bay.
The cottage has a spacious open plan ground floor which is occupied by the lounge, kitchen and dining area. Also on the ground floor, - a separate utility room, sun room and the master bedroom, which has its own en-suite.
Upstairs are the two other bedrooms and the main bathroom, all linked by a gallery-like wooden landing, which looks down over the lounge and entrance, and permits sea views through the skylight windows.
The cottage comes with a fully equipped kitchen, has double glazing, and oil-fired central heating. The TV has a DVD and electricity, heating, bed-linen and towels are all included.
Outside, the cottage sits on a small landscaped property. The front has a drive that will easily accommodate two cars, while the rear has a small, sheltered patio area connected to the sun room by patio doors.
The local beach, known as Pollan Beach, is just a three minute walk down the road. It is a long two mile stretch of sand facing north west onto the Atlantic. Great for a walk, you can take in the beauty of the changing scenery, including the golf course on Doagh Island, the ever present off shore outcrop known as Glashedy Island from which the cottage is named, bringing you to the ruined Carrickabraghy Castle at the northern end of the beach. Explore the rocky cliffs around the castle, and discover the impressive blowhole known as the hissing rock. The best time to see this is at high tide.
Ballyliffin Golf Course is almost certainly the main attraction, and the reason why the town has seen much growth over recent years. It has one of the finest golf courses in the country, with two links. - The Old Links, and the new Glashedy Links courses. A short seven minute drive from the cottage, will get you to the main clubhouse . Other courses on the Inishowen Peninsula are all within a half hours drive, and include Greencastle, Redcastle, Buncrana, and Culmore in Derry.
The village has four hotels, each with their own bars and restaurants. The golf club has its own bar and restaurant as well. If you are looking for the more traditional type of Irish Pub, then take a 2km drive south to the picturesque village of Clonmany, where you will find seven.
Also on the Isle of Doagh, just a little further on from the golf course, is the Famine Village, - a unique outdoor museum exhibiting displays of structures, models and tableaux depicting Ireland as it was in the 19th century, particularly during the great famine. The centre is well worth a visit, and is especially appealing to children and the young at heart, when it transforms into Santas Lapland in Nov-Dec. - Early booking for this event is essential to avoid disappointment.
The kitchen lies to the south west rear side of the cottage and shares the same open plan space as the dining area and lounge. Fully equipped, the kitchen has storage units, an electric hob and oven, microwave, fridge, kettle, toaster, stainless steel sink, and essential crockery, cutlery and cookware. A separate utility room has the washing machine, tumble dryer, iron and ironing board, and there is an outside clothes line. The dining table has six chairs, though you may wish to dine al-fresco in good weather. A small patio area lies to the rear, through patio doors off the sun room.
