The Dunfanaghy Lakes
The three Dunfanaghy lakes are all noted for their wild brown trout with the New Lake in particular thought to be one of the best brown trout fisheries in County Donegal.
The fishing season starts on the nearest weekend to St. Patrick’s day, but the lakes are not usually fished until April. Whilst there is no bag limit at the moment anglers are asked to keep conservation of the wild trout in mind, the unofficial bag limit is two trout.

Sessiagh Lough
This is a lake for the keen fisherman. The waters in this 80 acre lough are alkaline and clear. It has a good stock of large spotted wild trout averaging one and a quarter pounds with fish up to 4 pounds.Bank fishing is permitted all round the lake and four boats are available. Recommended flies are Wickham’s Fancy, Invicta, Greenwell’s Glory and the Black Pennell.
New Lake
New Lake was formed in the earlier part of the 20th century when a major storm caused an arm of the sea to be cut off by shifting dunes. This 230 acre lake is now recognised as one of the premier brown trout fisheries in the county. The lake is shallow with an average depth of 2m. It has good feeding and has a large supply of wild brown trout averaging 1 pound and some in excess of 4 pounds. The lake fishes best in May, June and September. Six boats are available – shore fishing is not permitted. The fish are free rising and any of the traditional fly patterns produce results.
Port Lough
Port Lough is a 75 acre Lough and is set in the hills 4km from Dunfanaghy. The waters are alkaline as the lake nestles on an outcrop of limestone. Port Lough has a large population of wild brown trout that average ½ lb. but can run up to 2lb. Two boats are available and bank fishing is permitted.
