North West Golf Club at Lisfannon<\/h1>\n

North West Golf Club at Lisfannon Donegal<\/strong> – Lying between beautiful Lough Swilly and Mouldy Mountain on the Inishowen Peninsula<\/a>, the North West Golf Club at Lisfannon has a wonderfully scenic setting. The course is located 4km from Buncrana<\/a>, 16km from Derry<\/a> and about 1km north of the quaint little village of Fahan<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Established in 1891, The North West Golf Club at Lisfannon has often been called the ‘St Andrews of Ireland’ as many people tend to draw its links comparisons with that of the famous Scottish links. The course is bordered by Lisfannon beach and covers 6314 yards with a SSS of 70.  While the terrain is flat the holes are nevertheless varied and the greens are top class.<\/p>\n

As with many traditional golf links, the North West course is characterized by pot bunkers and concealed runs and bumps approaching many of the greens. In addition most hazards and difficulties are not visible from the tee boxes so it is very much a case of careful shot selection – the driver might not come out of the bag too often.<\/p>\n

The North West welcomes Societies and Groups throughout the year. Presentations can be made afterwards in the clubhouse.  The club boasts a modern, newly refurbished clubhouse, with bar and excellent catering with wonderful views of Lough Swilly – “The Lake of Shadows”. The club shop is managed by Total Golf. Trolley and caddie hire is available. In addition to the Putting Green there is a small practice area and a chipping area.<\/p>\n

History<\/h3>\n

North West Golf Club was one of nine founder members of the Golf Union of Ireland (GUI) in 1891 (under the name of Buncrana) when it became the first golf club association in the world. The club was formed the same year when the professional at Royal Portrush, a gentleman called Mr Thompson, laid out a course at Fahan<\/a>, just south of Buncrana<\/a> in Donegal.<\/p>\n

The holes are routed on relatively flat links land on the shores of Lough Swilly and the club has fought a constant battle against coastal erosion over the years, resulting in huge rocks now being placed along hundreds of yards of shoreline in an attempt to keep the sea at bay<\/p>\n

The North West are proud of having Brian McElhinney, the 2005 British Amateur Open Champion, as a member.<\/p>\n
