Celebrating our Coastal Environment
\n<\/strong>Although only established in 2011, Seafest Lough Swilly has already made a name for itself among Ireland\u2019s maritime festivals. It is truly a festival for everyone\u00a0 – for sailors and watersports enthusiasts, be they experienced or novice; for families in search of something active to do with the kids; for people who simply take pleasure in being at the seaside; and of course for all those who enjoy good local food.<\/p>\n

On the Water<\/h3>\n

Seafest allows watersports novices sample the delights of windsurfing, sailing, paddle boarding, snorkelling and sea kayaking. Taster sessions in these activities are organised by local clubs like the Rathmullan Sailing and Watersports School,\u00a0 the Adventure One Surf Schoo<\/a>l and the Sheephaven Sub-Aqua Club. The hour long taster sessions are mainly free while there is a small cover charge for longer sessions( like the half day snorkling trip). There are also sightseeing trips on Lough Swilly aboard the first rate vessels of Rathmullan Charters<\/a>. The weekend contains a full programme of sailing races, with the feature being the Saldanha Cup, a traditional cruiser-racer sailing regatta that commemorates the 200th anniversary of the sinking of the frigate HMS Saldanha. There is also Currach racing for 2, 4 and 8 man boats as well as swimming races for various age groups. The 2012 festival saw a Tri \u2013a-Triathlon event for both juniors and adults. It is hoped to make these permanent events in future Seafests.

On Land<\/h3>\n

On land there is plenty to keep people occupied and entertained\u00a0 –\u00a0 traditional vintage fairground games, local produce from the Donegal Country Markets, crafts from Donegal Designer Makers and musical acts performing over the festival weekend.<\/p>\n

At the Table<\/h3>\n

One of the primary aims of Seafest is to celebrate the local coastal food culture: fresh fish and shellfish from the local waters; lamb, beef and pork from the surrounding fields \u2013 all of it turned into simply exceptional regional cuisine by talented local chefs. The food is served in a shorefront marquee \u2013 just a stones throw from all the water, beach and land based activities.<\/p>\n
