The name of the cottage is from the Irish for escape. - a suitable name aptly describing a location for getting a way from the hustle and bustle and noise of city life.
Situated in the new Dunailainn complex, and just off the main road linking Culdaff and Moville, the cottage would also serve as an ideal touring base from which one can explore this beautiful part of Ireland. The cottage has 4 bedrooms, can sleep up to 8, and has all the catering facilities and comforts one would expect.
Culdaff is situated on the northern coast of the Inishowen Peninsula, not too far from Malin Head, Irelands most northerly point.
Originally, Culdaff was an early Christian monastic settlement, that is known to have existed as early as the 8th century. Today, the present church has its foundations over the site of the original monastic church.
For a long time, Culdaff was little more than a small quiet fishing village, but since the mid 1990s, rapid growth in new housing has seen the village expand to a much larger version of what it was.
A lovely sandy Blue-Flag Beach is to be found to the north of the town, - with great surfing if the wind is right. There is a very good play-park for young children near the beach car park.
Bunagee Pier, has a delightful, picturesque small harbour for local fishing boats, and from which anglers can cast a line.
Water-sports and activities include.
Surfing, Canoeing, Fishing and Deep Sea -Angling, Snorkeling and Scuba Diving, Sailing and Swimming, to mention a few.
Non water-sports activities are also many and varied.
Paint-balling, Walking and Rambling, Cycling, Horse and Pony riding, Touring and Golf.
A 20 minute drive will bring one to the popular Ballyliffin Golf Club, with its 2 links course, alternatively, Greencastle, Buncrana, and Redcastle also cater for the golf enthusiast, and all within the Inishowen Peninsula.
Possibly, the main attraction in Culdaff has to be McGrorys. Established in 1924, This family run business includes a pub, restaurant, hotel and a very popular music entertainment centre known as Macs Backroom Bar, a venue where musicians from all over the world have performed. McGrorys is an establishment which has a reputation for fine food, good service, and great craic,
The Inishowen Peninsula represents a microcosm of all that Ireland has to offer in the way of scenic beauty, and this is best viewed by taking a tour of the drive known as the Inishowen 100, - so named because of its approximate 100 mile length, which follows a roughly circuitous route around the edge of the peninsula. You will be impressed by many different types of terrain, coastal and inland, rugged cliffs, sandy beaches, the unique character of the towns and villages along the way, and above all the changing light, which can alter a scene viewed from the same position in so may ways. - This is perhaps why Lough Swilly, which borders Inishowens western coast is otherwise known as The Lake of Shadows.
Do not expect to complete the tour in one day, you will want to stop and explore the landscape, linger in the towns and villages or simply stop to take in the beauty.
Do not forget your camera...
