Maggies Cottage is a traditional thatched Irish cottage set in a tranquil setting in the townland of Meenadiff 5 km east of Glencolmcille in Co Donegal. The cottage nestles into a hillside and overlooks a beautiful but sparsely populated valley. The road through the valley leads to the deserted famine village of Port – a true hidden gem of Donegal tourism. A 10 minute walk over the hills behind the cottage brings you to Lough Geata – a very secluded fishing lake.
The cottage is almost 150 years old and ownership has remained with the same family down the years. The thatching is done in a local style and is replaced every 3 / 4 years. Inside there is a cosy cottage with 3 comfortable bedrooms – two of the bedrooms and a shower room are in a modern extension to the original cottage. The sitting/living room has a multifuel stove and an initial supply of turf is supplied free of charge. Old style ornaments, pictures and crockery add to the cosy feeling of the room.
The Gaeltacht village of Glencolmcille is a short drive - or a very pleasant 45 minute walk - from the cottage. This small village balancing on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean is known far and wide for its Irish Hospitality, and particularly for its love of traditional Irish music and culture. The village has a petrol station, 2 grocery shops, post office, folk village, tourist information office, restaurant, and three pubs (with great fiddle music often to be found in Roarty's or Biddy's).
The area around the cottage is wonderful hill walking and rambling terrain. Sli Colmcille is a 70 km long route around the Slieve League Peninsula. It passes through Glencolmcille, Kilcar , Carrick, Glengesh, Ardara and Port. Almost half of this route is coastal with the other half through glens and upland areas.
The area around Glencolmcille abounds with stunning scenery, from the spectacular cliffs at Slieve League to the deserted famine village at Port and from the beautiful Silver Strand beach in Malinbeg to the dramatic Glengesh Pass on the road to Ardara.
Glencolmcille is renowned for traditional Irish music. It is home to a unique style of fiddle music which is celebrated every year with a Fiddlers Week (the first week of August). Féile Ghleanncholmcille is another annual summer festival when a great number of visitors arrive to join in on the festivities that include traditional song and dance, workshops and open air concerts.
Glencolmcille is also well-known both nationally and internationally as the home of Oideas Gael, an Irish language learning Institute established in 1984 to promote the Irish language and culture.
The homely sitting/living room in the cottage is comfortably furnished. Old style ornaments, pictures and crockery add to the cosy feeling. An initial supply of turf is supplied for the solid fuel stove.
The cottage has three comfortable bedrooms as follows:-
The cottage kitchen has an electric oven and hob, microwave and fridge. A freezer, together with a washing machine and tumble dryer is located in a shed adjacent to the cottage. There is a dining table and 4 chairs a shelf style dining area with 2 chairs.HTML clipboard H1{font-family:arial,helvetica;font-size: 12pt;color: black}

Congratulations on an absolutely wonderful site! I was going crazy researching availability on other sites - that did not state price, no. of rooms, bathroom facilities often (even after clicking three or four links) and also did not follow a pattern for each entry. Your site is delightful. I could go through all pages of entries and with the price details given immediately did not need to waste time over entries not within my budget.
