Buncrana is the largest town on the Inishowen peninsula and is situated on the eastern shores of Lough Swilly, a long, narrow fjord-like strip of water extending some 40Km south from its entrance to the North Atlantic between Fanad and Dunaff Heads. It is also known as the Lake of Shadows, because of the way changing weather affects the light reflecting off the waters.
The town has a good infrastructure and includes 3 hotels 17 pubs, 4 supermarkets, 4 schools, a children's play area, a cinema, 3 banks, places of worship, and many other shops and service providers.
There are a number of sports and recreation facilities including.
The North West Golf Club at Lisfannon.
There is a yacht marina at Fahan.
In the summer months, a ferry service operates from the pier, crossing the Swilly to Rathmullan, a convenient way of beginning a tour of west Donegal.
The Grianan of Aileach is a group of historic monuments in County Donegal built on the hill of Grianán which is 244 metres high. The main monument is that of an Iron Age stone fortress. This important historical site was a centre of culture and politics during the rule of early Irish chieftains. A short drive from Sandymount Cottage takes you to the hilltop beside the Grianan - enjoy the panoramic views of Lough Foyle and Swilly before entering the rath itself.
Locally, there are lovely walks along the shoreline and in the surrounding hills, with the White Strand, and a Blue Flag Beach at Lisfannon to the south, while along the northern shore, a paved pathway will take you from Castle bridge, past Vaughan House and ODohertys Keep, onto Neds Point, Porthaw Beach and finally Stragill Beach. Admire beautiful coastal scenery along the way, with benches laid out at intervals along the path, where you can catch your breath and enjoy the views, or maybe watch the sunset. After Stragill the path ends, and at this point you may want to turn around. if you are really fit you can continue on to Linsfort and Dunree
A shorter walk takes one through the lovely Swan Park, which follows the Crana River along a wooded path, from Castle Bridge to the road bridge. A little further along the river, is the Tullyarvan Mill, a renovated 19th-century grain mill, which now hosts art exhibitions, music festivals, concerts, plays, and provides a venue for private functions and conferences. It also has a 52 bed hostel.

I travel a lot so I'm always looking for interesting places to stay - anything to avoid another carbon copy hotel - and this has got to be one of the best local travel sites I've seen. Plenty of detail, tons of photos, excellent location info and clear pricing - everything I need to make an informed call. Great job and I'll be recommending the site to anyone else I know who's travelling in Donegal.
