Glencolmcille, Donegal

Glencolmcille is a coastal town located on the southwest Gaeltacht tip of County Donegal, Ireland. There are numerous natural beauties are within the immediate area, including, the Slieve League cliffs, the Silver Strand at Malin Beg and Glen Head itself. This coastal area was once notorious for smuggling. A trip to the Silver Strand will reward you with stunning views of the gorgeous beach and surrounding rocky cliffs. Colm Cille and his followers lived in the valley and the ruins of several of their churches can still be seen there. Following a dispute with the church about the right to copy religious manuscripts, Colm Cille went into exile on the isle of Iona of the west coast of Scotland. The village has a petrol station, grocer, post office, folk village, woollen mill, restaurant and three pubs.

If you would like to find out more about the Irish language and culture, Oideas-Gael run courses throughout the summer. Combine an Irish language course with hill-walking, traditional music or even painting. Relax and listen to the world go by at one of our local pubs, while listening to a seísun of Irish music by some of Donegal's finest traditional fiddlers.
