Tranquillity cottage is located 1 mile from the fishing village of Burtonport and 2 miles from Dungloe town. A traditional cottage built in the early 1900’s, it has been restored and re-thatched to a high standard and modern finish. It offers self-catering holiday accommodation for up to 2-4 adults or children.
The cottage which is nestled snugly into the Donegal landscape offers an oasis of peace and tranquillity in a beautiful rural setting.
History of the cottage
Tranquility cottage was built from local stone in 1902 for workers building the railway in Donegal. In 1905 the Gallagher family bought the cottage for £2 and it became the family home for two adults and 10 children! The cottage has remained in the family for the past 100 years.
Dungloe is the largest town in the “Rosses”, (the land of over 100 lakes). The “Mary From Dungloe International Festival” is held here every year and has made the town of Dungloe famous throughout the world. The town boasts many amenities and services including a leisure centre, tennis courts, pitch & putt, quality hotels & restaurants, a caravan site, a tourist office, and is well known for its excellent angling facilities.
Burtonport is a small fishing village situated in the heart of the Rosses and the gateway to the islands of Arranmore, Rutland and Inishfree. It’s Summer festival at the end of July is packed with family friendly events and activities for all ages. It has 2 restaurants one of which are listed in the Irish Pubs Irelands Guide and both are famous for their local fresh seafood. There is a ferry service to Arranmore Island every day (car & passenger). In recent times Burtonport has become very popular for leisure boating and water sports including a PADI dive centre and Sea Fishing excursions which can be arranged locally.
